Do units showing up on the flank cause surprise?

The combined Gallic tribes butchered some foolish Athenians who had invaded our lands most of it owing to this

Unit of heavy cav came in behind a unit of hoplites and smashed them in the flank.

Was this reason enough for a waver test?

Apologies to Demosthenes if it was not.

Flank marches do not count as surprise - sorry to say.

Since They came in literally on their flank, charging. About 100 paces from the board edge.
I would have questioned it but it seemed clear.

But I will check the rules. Always a good idea!!
Thanks Todd for replying.

Todd is correct...an arriving flank march is not 'surprise' and does not cause a waver. A well executed flank march, arriving in a reasonable time window, is quite good enough.

I don't have the rules with me but at the time I remember reading something about surprise and waver.
But I will look at it again.
But also how can I argue against Kaeser and Gilson. Sad
