Hello All,
Dmitri and I are celebrating the fiscal cliff with his Carthaginians taking on the Pharoah (NKE). Marharbal's LC just smacked into some studly Egyptian LI javelinmen. The LI failed waver and stood. In ensuing combat Marharbal rolled -5/+2 while pushing LI back disordered. Does LI recoil before effects of catastrophe?
Thanx,
John |

Glad to see you two playing!
As you describe the HTH, according to 10.4, the instant the general is killed, the unit "becomes broken". Immediately, the LI in this situation recovers from shaken. The LI does *not* recoil because Table 11-2 clearly states that foot fighting mounted does *not* recoil from mounted if the latter breaks off or routs.
Now, we can debate the finer points of "simultaeneous" here...but we're not.
Combat takes place before combat results. The LC in question goes into 8C (page 17) already broken, hence, the criteria for the LI recoiling no longer applies.

Note - the body with the general in it has to take 2 CPF - the only reason I add this is I fought an entire nationals had an ally general die of catastrophe in every battle - and only afterwards realized that it was -5+2 and 2 cpf - probably does not apply here - but I felt like an idiot (sometimes still do when someone points out rules I used to know) |

Thanks for clarification. I often miss nuances.
