I thought I'd post a few links and tidbits about two places I've been two in the last 8 months and one I'd love to go to.
The Oriental Institute:

is part of the Univ of Chicago. "Oriental" is an older term referring to what we would now call the Middle East. It has a fantastic collection of everything dating from the late Stone Age cultures thru the Persian era.
I was fortunate to be there with an old friend who's getting her PhD in Late Bronze Age religions (that's an over-generalization) so she was in hog heaven. It's great being there with somebody who can actually read the cunieform and even some of the hieroglyphics.
And they had porn:

I have been wanting to go here for 20 years. The museum collection is nice and not overwhelming but you go simply to walk the grounds. I've been to Hadrian's Villa in Tivoli a couple of times and it was great to see a modern recreation of something similar.
The Penn Museum:

I haven't been here but it's now high on my list. I just learned that they have in their archive of cunieform tablets one that carries the inscription:
"Alexander is entering the city."
Yup, written by a scribe in Babylon literally as Alexander was marching into the place. I don't think it's on display but if I ever go, I'm gonna try to arrange in advance some kind of tour so I can see it.
