Is it all right that the Polybian Roman list (33) have no ditched palisade for camp, as the Later Carthaginians (34) have?

Do they HAVE to have ditched palisade camp??
I run EIRomans and I have one but it is more my choice than a MUST.
I don't have the polybian list here. But I don't think so.
If some has the list, please respond. I will check and see.

I am not any kind of Roman historian, so I have no idea whether there is any reason why the Polybians might have a ditched palisade camp. But I can offer a couple of comments.

1. No, the Classical Warrior Polybian list does not permit such, and neither do the published errata.

2. Historical evidence would have to be clear, compelling, and -- most importantly -- show that such a structure factored significantly in the outcome of a field battle (as opposed to a siege or some other form of engagement). Short of that, there's no basis for 4 Horsemen to consider an adjustment.

And keep in mind that my opinions are strictly my own.

Yes the Romans of that period did have a marching camp.
In the old but excellent book about the Roman army by the late Peter Connolly, you can see an illustration of such a camp for a whole consular army.
In the text, you can read that at the battle of the Olympus Mons against the later Macedonians of Perseus, the Roman general Paulus Emilius, let his troops first construct the marching camp, against the wills of the legionaries to fight straight on...
By the way we read in other sources that the Carthaginians and other later Carthaginians also have a fortified camp and each day, their armies offers battle after leaving the camp. When battle is not joined, the army leave each evening back to their camp.

If you want to purchase a ditched palisade for a Polybian Roman camp, go ahead and do so.
