Ok - another interesting list to consider. We haven't seen Palmyran on the table regularly since 6th edition and Dave Markowitz's teen years...

Looking at it now it is certainly not an "A" list army but it has potential if you like the Roman time period. It has striking power in cavalry -a little slower at 120 paces, solid foot with Legionaries and regular, loose bowmen. It also has decent light troops.

Here is my first take on the list:

CinC 2E Reb B SHC/EHC L + PA - 202
3x Sub 2E Reg B SHC/EHC L + P - 132 (396)

3x 2E Palmyran Cav Reg B LC JLS,B,Sh - 54 (162)

4x 4 E Palmyran Bowmen Reg C LMI B 1/2 Sh - 66 (264)

8E Desert Archers Ir C LI B 1/2 Sh - 65

2x 2E Palmyran Bowmen Reb C LI B 1/2 Sh - 24 (48 )

Roman Sub 1E Reg B HC Jls,Sh+ P - 82

2x 6E Roman Legionaries Reg C MI HTW,Jls,Sh - 130 (260)

3E Auxilia Reg C LMI 2/3 Jls,Sh 1/3 B - 54

4E Auxilia Bowmen Reg C LMI B, 1/2 Sh - 66

1599 points
21 scouting

The SHC are not knights but all can be impetuous with the generals and are manuverable being reg.

The Bowmen 5 units are excellent troops and 1/2 shielded and cheaper

The Legions don't have dart but are still very hard hitting.

The Aux don't have dart and that limits them more so are minimum purchased and only have the back rank of bow because I had a few points left.

Neat list

I've always like the Palmyran list, and if I were inclined to play an army that showcased Romans favroably this would be on my short list of army lists to consider. The Romans are not overly expensive since you aren't paying for HI. There's abundant shooting and quality light troops. And you have the all important lance-armed cavalry to compliment the legionaries.

Todd's way of buying it is pretty compelling. The only quibble I have is that it would be good to have one unit that is all EHC so that you have some lancers with a 160p reach.

I'm not sure what the Roman contingent is really for...as sadly legionaries can't catch anything that can run from them...can't pin anything that doesn't want to engage them and don't have a missile weapon to reach out and touch someone.

Shouldn't Palmyran be about the mounted troops supported by open and loose order foot archers?

Understandably, there Frank.

However, I would assume we're talking 25mm (as 15mm is all but dead here in the states). Palmyran has enough scouting to start near enough to the center for the Legions to be able to push their way across the board. They are tough against elephants (as are the LMI B) and can fight against most foot.

Yes - there are no Darts, but used in conjunction with the bow and Cats they extend the frontage of push/combat and still hit at a high enough factor.

It is combined arms that will win the day. Tough foot, mounted to extend reach (and shock) and massed bowfire along with some decent lights.

I know SHC is a touch slow, but definitely tough to shoot up and does pack a punch being impetuous with the generals.

TK

Your Roman legions influence at most 1/5 of the table frontage. Also, your 21 scouting points are...useful yet will be eclipsed over half the time.

Your legions will be screened and ignored, or killed.

Of course the only real proof is in the playtesting...

Palmyrans was my first army. I always had an affection for them. Now that SHC is 2 points cheaper, they are almost cost effective. They are in 15mm and I live in eastern Pennsylvania.

With decent terrain placement, 40% of the board can be blocked off. then the Legions can dominate half the open space, while the Cataphracts give your opponents uncomfortable choices else-ware.

That is funny. Usually egos increase the superlatives in a name, not depreciate them. I live in Linfield, a small village but part of greater Limerick Township. We don't deserve a post office of our own, and so use the town of Royersford instead.

Hello all

I had another idea, as the cataphracts are the main force of that army and you have plenty of regular LMI archers, why not make commands with LMI archers (4 stands)/SHC cataphracts (2 stands)/ LMI archers (4)/ SHC cataphracts (2)/ LMI archers (4)...
Two such commands with an EHC general (2 stands), and the third command with units of 6 stands irregularB volunteer light horse archers commanded again by an EHC general?
The advantage is that the line advance at the same trot that is 120 paces, the archers can prepare the charge of the cataphracts, or disrupt HC/EHC ennemies, and the light volunteer cavalry can skirmish and guard a wing. The option for EHC generals is interesting for the 160 paces they can move.
What's your idea gentlemen?

Robert
