Hy Guys

We are not clear about the number of figs allowed to fire in a skirmish unit depending of the range.
Our comprehension:
For a unit of 18 MC B in 3 ranks in skirmish at short range, the number of firers is 6+3+3 (First rank at full effect, 2nd and 3rd at 50%)

For a unit of 18 MC B in 3 ranks in skirmish at LONG range, the number of firers is 6+3+3 , do we just halve the total (in that case, we have 6 firers) or do we halve rank per rank, rounded up and so we have 7 firers?

But for the same MC unit equipped with JLS,what is the number of firers at short and long range?
Do we round up after or before the round up for the weapon?
Thank you

Skirmish, rear rank firing, and long range penalties all take place on a unit but take place at different points.

First rank firing isn't penalized by rear rank or skirmish, but would pay long range (half). So 3 at short range or 1.5 at long.

Second rank firing, non skirmishing, full at short range (bow or crossbow), most other weapons are halved. Skirmishing at long range, everyone is halved and halved again for effective 1/4 figs

Third rank firing, non skirmishing (bow) fires half effect (rear rank) but not halved again for long range. Skirmishing mounted would fire half effect if at short range and quarter effect if at long range.

JLS only fires short range at 40 paces, so always fire rank and a half. Sling is similar, fires short range out to 120 paces and thus always fires rank and a half.

Hello Nervis,

So, if I understand correctly, you are asking if the rounding-up process is applied to each individual rank, so 7 figures firing, or to the unit as a whole, so only 6 figures firing?

I believe it is done on a rank basis so you would fire with 7 figures.

But that is only my interpretation!

Regards,

Raphael

Skirmish is halved beyond the first rank; mounted skirmishers get half of a third rank. Halving is by unit, not by rank. Skirmishing units are halved again for being at long range. JLS has no long range.

So in your example:
* MC with bow would count as 12 figures firing at close range, 6 figures firing at long range;
* MC with JLS would count as 12 figures firing out to 40p, and do not get to fire beyond 40p.
