so the question is - I have two Irr elephants or chariots with a detachment two ranks deep behind them. I win combat and expand - I believe there is no problem with uneven ranks in follow up .
If however I wish to expand out before combat - would I have to have the same number of ranks? - as body containing regulars or could I have a rank of elephants with two ranks of infantry beside them?
It may be in the rules - will look tonight - but I dont remember the rules addressing mixed regular and irregular troops - but the specification for runners allows it?

Sure. Several lists allow parent body and detachment to differ with respect to regular / irregular. Khmer is probably the most common example, but there are others. And any staff element can join any body, regardless of whether staff element or body are regular or irregular.

No not a common occurrence, but definitely one that can come up. And I don't know what the correct ruling would be in this case.

This has come up before. Search around in here to see if we've ever posted an answer. I'll get around to some formal answer as time allows.

Note that currently only two cases can mix regulars and irregulars:
1) Elephants as the irregulars as either the detachment or parent body of a regular body.

2) A general joining a body of the other training class under the 'generals join' rules.

A non-general Irr chariot cannot currently have a Reg detachment that could then join it.
