The series focuses on the time period of Alfred the Great and the development and struggle of his kingdom of Wessex. Also, his idea of a unified England in the face of multiple Danish/Norse invasions. Good story and reasonable depictions of history and combat. If you need your fix about shieldwalls then this story is for you. I am in book #9 and haven't tired of the tales. It also talks about the culture of both Saxons and Norse/Danes. Going 'a viking' is also discussed and portrayed.
I'm always looking for a good series of historical fiction - this one is solid.

I also recommend these books. Cornwell is the best writer of historical fiction. His personal links to the sites depicted in the books are also interesting. |

I have been reading this series for years. I've read the first 7 so far, and really enjoyed them. This was a period of history I knew little about; historical fiction is always a great way to ease yourself into a new period. And yes, these books encompass some pretty vivid descriptions of what shield wall warfare was like. |
