Thank you. Also, I am surprised that the early Teutonic knights are not allowed.
Will there also be any other warrior tournaments at coldwars? |
Sigh. This has been explained earlier. The Teuts are getting their very own theme for starters. Plus I wanted to have a far more tightly defined theme this time around. We've done a variation of this before where we took the Levant Crusades and ran a Mini Campaign Theme at Cold Wars followed by a broader one at Hcon. This time it's a multi-year approach.

Hummm.........
Sir Dan........I don't want to get picky........but I must make something clear....
I did not know that Lord ScottH had usurped one of my many titles "Old Coot".
Well to be perfectly clear. "Old Coot" was not one of my many titles. "Old Guy", "Old Fool" and such titles. So maybe I am too sensitive. That's it. Sorry to bring it up. Disregard the above.....
Ed the old guy.
P.S. Hey I know ScottH is still a young whipper-snapper. |

We usually get a few more folks...6 teams would be nice as a minimum, 12 people...8 teams would be awesome.

IMPORTANT: Check the first post in this thread. We've made a couple of tweaks, notably to Komnenan Byzantine and the Crusader Order rules. The changes to the latter are in bold.
Regarding attendance, look at last year to get an idea about this year. Like last year, I'll help round out teams. Any flexibility on the part of players should we have odd numbers is always greatly appreciated.
I'll also be available to round out the Mini.

Will anyone have extra armies if people arrive without one or teams need to split? I have a ton of not terribly attractive lead if it is needed |

I'm going to pack my generic Dark Ages/1st Crusade stuff. Haven't bothered to do an army list figuring if I do anything, it'll be like last year and I piggyback onto somebody else's army.

Just confirming - I think it's clear, but at least one player does not: Varangians do *not* cost an extra point per figure, not being specifically Byzantine infantry. Correct? |

Wrong. Varangian foot costs extra.
OF COURSE IT COSTS EXTRA!!!!!!!!!
And it is clear. The text for the army:
"Any figure getting special rules costs +1pt per figure. This applies only to those troops covered by Byzantine Infantry Rules and Byzantine Cavalry Rules."
Please note the careful wording "covered by Byzantine Infantry Rules". Now go to Holy Warrior and look under the Byzantine Infantry Rules section. What do you find there?
VARANGIANS
Doesn't anybody even sniff intent in all of this?
Grrrrrrrrrrrr.
scott
PS: Thanks for asking *now* as opposed to 2 hours into your first game the way sooooooo many of the extant player base would do. _________________ These Rules Suck, Let's Paint! |

Glad that I asked. I was trying to parse the careful wording - in the errata document (which yes, I read) there's a note that Varangians are "not technically Byzantine troops, hence none of the above rules apply."
Then, the Event rules are precisely worded: "This applies only to those troops covered by Byzantine Infantry Rules and Byzantine Cavalry Rules." Note that this does NOT say 'any Byzantine special rule' but rather appears to exclude the non-Byzantine (i.e. Varangian) special rule.
Hence my conclusion.
OK, I am wrong. But in that case I don't know why the line doesn't read "Any troop covered by any of points 1-6 in the 'Byzantine Rules' section of Holy Warrior errata cost one point extra per figure" or some such. As I said, glad to have it resolved.
[I still think that Komnenan is competitive. Assume that it's indeed effectively a 1600 point army - which is an overstatement - and ask whether you'd rather have 2000 points of Arab Dynasty. I doubt it ] |

I see your sense of confusion...and we tend to work off of consolidated rule books and not several scattered documents.
My (and Scott and Bill)'s copy of Holy Warrior doesn't read the way the Errata on the website reads.
Holy Warrior is on an eventual list to be updated and re-released...but...none of us get paid for this other than in your accolades...you do...have accolades for us?
Cordially yours at the end of a lance,
