As a new player, I've heard that artillery and handguns cause detrimental effects, like waiver checks but can't find it in the rules. Can you help me?

Can Bombards shoot elephants over intervening friends?

How many ranks firing do skirmishing LI HG units get?

The search engine is an amazing tool. Wink

Answer to first question is "no". Here's the pertinent post:
http://www.fourhorsemenenterprises.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17182&highlight=visibility+elephants

I didn't go back to the referenced 2005 post in that one although I've had to on more than one occasion over the years.

Second question needs no supporting historical post:

1.5 ranks

Here's the original post (from the old Yahoo group) in 2005:

http://www.fourhorsemenenterprises.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12535&highlight=overhead+shooting+elephants

That's only if you want to see the discussion. The post I referenced above answers the actual question.

My search terms:

overhead shooting elephants

Make sure you click on "search for all terms".

So what possible use would there be for artillery that can only shoot at targets directly to their front, without intervening troops? Even from a hilltop?

You cannot shoot over friends - but you can shoot over enemies unless the elephants are within 40 paces of a friendly body to them- if your bombards were on carts (dont know that troops exist) - but I believe you could then shoot over your troops - similarly if you are on a hill you can shoot over your troops - thats at least how I understand it

There is an art to effective use of artillery. We see plenty of it. Greg Hauser has used it most...and consistently.

Believe me, it's not a waste but you need a really good understanding of the army you want to use it with, how to get the placement right, etc. It's not for beginners. Razz

You have to read the rules on overhead shooting, shooting priorities and then rulse on artillery specifically...and effects of fire. Note that no one counts shielded to artillery fire, so that's the key effect of prep shot from artillery on many troops (to cause a waver to various troop types).

Artillery also have a very long range of fire...and can be placed angled to shoot across a great section of the enemy army. It's a mistake to place them firing straight forward.

Consider a general's staff element attached to the artillery to guide fire.

Hussite I think is an example army that could put bombards into fighting wagons. However, the paragraph on who is permitted to shoot overhead only lists stone throwers and bolt shooters, bombards are left out.

Hussite artillery are mounted in Integral Tr. There's *no* historical justification for having them in Fighting Tr.

I'll be the first to admit that if somebody emailed me a bunch of ideas on how to make Hussites playable, I'll read that email. Wink

I'm going to take Scott's advice and leave my bombards unpainted for a while.
