In Byzantine camp on Bulgarian border:

The servant moved quickly into the command tent and pulled aside the curtain that revealed the sleeping camp commander. The servant bend low over the sleeping figure of Michael, sub general to Edwardus, and whispered into his ear, “they are massing on the border.”
Michael’s eyes opened wide and he shot up. Suddenly, his face winced and he grabbed his side.
“Your old wound?” queried the servant.
“Yes, the Zulu spear.”
Quickly, his countenance hardened, “Send messengers to Demitri, Muster his cavalry.”
The servant raced out and Michael quickly dressed.

In the Thessalonica Monastery.

The quiet boots of a Byzantine cavalry commander marched across the monastery stone floor. Demitri approached the monk standing outside a door.
“Is Edwardus available?” He asked.
“Yes, he is finishing his prayers, but he is still having trouble with walking.”
Suddenly, the door opened and Edwardus appeared.
“How are you, my Lord? “ Demitri inquired.
“I can still ride a horse if that is what you mean.” He replied with a comic smile.
“I have read the reports from the south. Luckily, the mixed battle in the south has stabilized the southern front. Jamiedes did a good job in holding the front. The emperor says that General Mike Mallamchies has all he can do to keep the Persian frontier peaceful. Therefore, we are on our own. There will be no troops coming from Constantinople. I wrote to Michael to draw what troops he could from the border forts along the Danuble. That and your troops should be enough to handled the problem.”
“You do realize that this King of the Bulgars is no mean local chieftain. He is a known conqueror and inspiring leader. I don’t feel that we will stop him. “
“Where is your faith, Demitri. You are the fiery one. I would have expected that from Michael.”
Edwardus put his arm around Demitri and using his cavalry commander as a staff, hobbled down the corridor.

The Bulgarian army gathered on the border of the Byzantine Empire for the first time in many years. Before they entered the empire the Bulgarian army camped at the duplicitous ally Kollmerica, a state whose allegiance could be secured temporarily by plying them with wine and other commodities. There the army feasted on smoked pork and fine ale.

As the delicious grease streaked down the fingers of Krasimir asked his mighty Khan, “Sire, why have we waited so long to make this incursion into the Empire? You promised us great loot and many fine women to bring back to our state.”

The Khan turned towards his sub general, “Krasimir, it has taken many years to finally gather the nobles, horse archers, and our subjugated Slavs in such a great number that this has turned a conquest, and not a mere raid.” Krum wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and took a swig if his ale. “Tomorrow young Krasimir, we will set up on the Byzantine Empire with a ferocity they have not seen in many years. Too long we have been treated like a dog at the imperial table. Tomorrow they shall taste of the wrath of our lances and bows. Tomorrow, we shall feast again at the walls of Constantinople.”
