Can a body be formed at deployment with a rear rank bodyguard detachment including a general?
I want my Ancient British LHI bodyguards to form the second rank behind my Chariots using the Rules for a unit (Chariots) being able to form a single body with their detachment (LHI Bodyguard including general)?
Or does the rule of generals at the front prevent this formation? |

In the rule section for 180 degree turns we have:
"Elements containing generals may then replace a front rank element directly to their (new) front."
In the rules for generals on independent staff elements joining units we have:
"When a mounted general joins a mounted unit, his staff element is inserted in its front rank. A general on foot that joins a unit has his element placed in the front rank, regardless of whether the unit joined is mounted or on foot."
What may be relevant in your case is 2.513 Staff Element:
"If a staff element is incorporated into a unit, the staff element must always be in the unit’s front rank."
I'd say that this means it needs to be in the front rank of the detachment...a combined body of a parent and its detachment is a 'combined unit'...and thus the chariots could be up front, with a detachment containing a general behind. |

Thanks! It was the Staff Element rule I was thinking of. Sorry I should have been more specific and saved you some typing. My thinking went along the same lines as well. I'm trying to upgrade the combat power of my Chariot units and this is the only way to do so whilst keeping the Unit's morale at 'B'. I suppose by the same logic this unit would have to forego the general's combat effect, for 'fighting in the front line'. The problem for the British is that they only get the 'B' grade foot as part of a general's bodyguard, and I'd like to save the 'A' grade foot (upgrade for the 'C' foot) for other things.
