Do you really _want_ players to go through this parade-ground drill
of over-expansion, walking forward, then contracting?
Realistically, wouldn't the unit just march into the gap and then
expand to fill it?
Philosophically, would Regs or Irregs be faster at stuffing
themselves into a gap wider/narrower than their starting frontage and
re-dressing their ranks (eg not be disordered) ? Or would both take
the same amount of time? This should drive your decision on the
mechanics required to achieve the result.
The answers may not be symmetrical- it might take longer to go from
narrower to wider than vice-versa.
