The second sentence in 9.21 is too complicated for my old brain.
I'm kinda tired so excuse me if I've contradicted myself anywhere
here; but the point is that I shouldn't have to work this hard to
figure it out, even if I am tired. I think separate sentences for
"contact" and "subsequent bounds" would make for much more clarity.
Does it say that in "subsequent bounds" of hand to hand, all the
crew can fight in "any given direction?" Which would mean that after
contact, all the crew can fight.
If so- why only two crew in the first bound, and everyone thereafter?
Looking harder at the sentence, what I'm confused about is as to
whether the 'first contact' phrase "any given direction" refers to
FIGURES or DIRECTIONS.
If the first, it means that a maximum of two figures can fight, but
they get their choice of any one direction in which to fight.
If the second, it means that you can fight in as many directions as
necessary, but only with up to two figures in each direction.
And that leads me to question the meaning of the 'subsequent bounds'
phrase "any or all" because its reference must be the same as the
previous phrase, so I don't know if it means "any or all FIGURES [can
fight in one direction only]" or "[up to two figures can fight in
each of] any or all DIRECTIONS."
