As one who has spent quite of bit of time on this side of the world, I
disagree with Greg's comments regarding "common interest". The AG shows up
because in his current political equation, the Emperor/King/CINC has ordered
the AG to supply him troops. If the AG senses a change in the
political/military equation, he defects. The problem is our interpretation
of the word "Ally" which connotes a different relationship; maybe it should
be "vassal general". Agree that points should not be a penalty; only his
reliability. Mercenaries are a horse of a different color.

I might get to watch several "Ags" go unreliable here in Damascus over the
coming months.....

I never quite got the whole logic of the difference between the S/G
and the
A/G.

The A/G is bringing his men to the battle because he and his have a
common
interest, common enemy or whatever (in most cases), where as when
you see
troops from various nations on a Byzantine list, for example, these
are
considered paid mercenaries (in most cases), giving them the ability
to be
commanded by S/G.

So, the guys with the common interest, enemy, etc .... have the
ability to
flee or change sides while the guys that are the paid mercenaries
don't?

Human nature is always a hard thing to understand .... even by
people
writing rules for generals, :-)

>>>> GREG >>>> Actually, it was, "common interests, common enemy, or
whatever (in most cases)", which is about as open ended a statement as you
can get without saying, "Any allied troops may or may not .... at any time
choose or not choose, to show or not show .... for whatever reason they see
fit or in their best interest, or without any reason at all." Perhaps I will
try that one next time .... go figure!

As far as common intersts go .... two world wars and desert storm comes to
mind.
