Some of us here in South Texas, noticed one day that the Alternative

List Rules
1. Comanche Braves Dismount as LSHI (Loose Order Super Heavy
Infantry), and carry scalping knifes. Units receiving 3CPF from
Dismounted Comanche Braves, are considered scalped, which is a second
cause of disorder, and an immediate waver test.
2. Comanche Braves and Scouts fight two full ranks, when charging,
countercharging, pursuing, following up, halted, recoiled or routing.
3. Troops Labeled "Man Called Horse" may choose between being Regular
or Irregular at any given time. This simulates both the obedience and
fanaticism caused by hanging from your nipples for the better part of
a night. As the point cost for these troops fluctuates during the
game, they are always free.
4. BHCW – Both Handed Cutting Weapon. Mercenary Arapaho Ghost Dancers
armed with BHCW, actually attack twice, using 1HCW factors. Troops so
armed count as shielded, because of the tremendous blocking power of
this type of fighting style.
5. Comanche cavalry can ambush form brush or rocky ground. Troops
chasing evading Comanche cavalry are automatically disordered,
because of the amount of sand thrown up in their faces.
6. Missile troops shooting at "Little Big Man" Warriors take -3 off
tactical factors for shooting at small targets.
7. Each game, one Comanche unit may be defined as made of "Sacred
Smoke." This unit is impervious to missile or hand-to-hand damage for
the duration of the game. In order to not insult various Native-
American Indian beliefs, this "Sacred Smoke" unit will inflict damage
as normal.
8. Tejano Mesnaderos suffer from poor moral and extreme self
interest. On deployment they must be no further than one tactical
move from the friendly army's baggage, and on bound one, must
immediately charge and loot that baggage. As these troops are treated
as "hostile", their point value is actually subtracted from the total
of troops taken, rather than added to it.
9. Troops armed with HG, shoot effectively at 960p
10. "DOG", Jake Cutter's War Dog may not be killed, because the SPCA
dictates that no animals may be harmed during the playing of this
game.
Comments
The Comanches were fierce warriors who lived on the Southern Plains.
The Southern Plains extend down from the state of Nebraska well into
Texas. The Comanches are one of the most historically important
Indian cultures from Texas. The Comanches were much more than just
warriors. According to the old Spanish records and other sources they
were also very good traders. The Spanish used to hold trade fairs in
the city of Taos and in Santa Fe in what is now New Mexico. Records
from trade fairs in old Taos and Santa Fe describe the Comanches at
the trade fairs. They were well dressed. The Comanche leaders often
wore fine European clothes, with many silver conchos and fine leather
boots. And they had money. They would come to trade in organized
groups. There was always one Comanche in these groups who could speak
Spanish, French, and four or five Indian languages. The group always
had a leader who was very skilled as a trader and diplomat. The
problem was most of what they had to sell or trade was stuff they had
stolen. They sold the stolen horses and women and children they had
kidnapped. The relatives of the women and children would come to
these fairs to buy them back. This kidnapping for ransom would later
get the Comanche in big trouble with the American settlers who were
much less tolerant of it than the Spanish or Pueblo Indians were. The
Comanches were almost as new to Texas as the Spanish. They came from
as far north as Wyoming. The Comanches were once part of the Shoshone
Indians. The Comanche language and the Shoshone language are still
almost the same. Bands of Comanches began moving south around 1300,
and by the early 1500s they showed up in the Texas panhandle and in
New Mexico. Before the Comanches arrived, the Jumano Indians, Pueblo
Indians and some Apache Indians had lived in the Southern Plains. To
move into this area the Comanches first had to drive these other
tribes out. To drive out the Apaches they must have been very fierce
fighters. This area is now part of the Texas Panhandle and Northwest
Texas. The area of modern Texas around Amarillo is where the
Comanches first lived in, but southern expansion continued. By the
middle 1500s they had come almost down to where Kerrville is now and
over to near Austin. This is where the first German and American
settlers found them, and where most maps show them to be – from
around Kerrville all the way up to Amarillo and the western part of
the state of Oklahoma and in eastern New Mexico. The city of Lubbock
is in the middle of the old Comanche territory. The Comanches were
organized as bands, and are not really a tribe. The only time there
were leaders over more than one band was when two or three bands
joined to fight a common enemy or to go on a very big raid. Then a
temporary war chief would be named to lead the war parties. After the
war or raid the chief would quit and each band would go back to its
own leaders.
While there is no actual armor present, the harsh Texas sun toughened
skin to the point of extreme hardness. This plus the protection of
the "Great Spirit", is best simulated by classifying Comanche Braves
as SHK. Assorted white people were never able to gain this level of
toughness, but their horses were, so are classified as HC. The HTW
represents the Tomahawk, and can be used both mounted and on foot.
The basis for high moral is the following quote: "The Comanche excel
above all the other nations in breeding, strength, valor, and
gallantry." - Athanase de Mezieres, 1777. Little Big Men Warrior's
missile weapons are classified as Longbows, because it was so long to
them. Angry rattlesnakes count as biological weapons. "DOG", Jake
Cutter's War Dog, should be treated as an Irregular A ten-horse
scythed chariot, that can go in any terrain and charges 240p. In the
movie "The Comancheros", the dog seemed to be everywhere, so players
may take up to 20. A wagon full of burning ravaged white women
counts as flaming pigs with the benefit of cover. As such it may be
concealed under a cape or loin cloth until ready to ignite. Troops
concealing white women under their loin cloth march and approach at
half move, due to having white women in their loin cloth. They do
however count as eager. Herds of stampeding buffalo were common and
uncontrollable. As buffalo were very numerous, quite a few herds are
given. Troops marked * cannot be used if any troops not on this list
are used. Troops marked ** may only be used if troops on this list
are used. Troops marked *** may only be used if troops so marked are
used.

*** LOL! The accompanying troops count as eager! Question for authors: "Does
this work like a Rash general being present? Additionally, would one need to
make any type of roll each round to possibly not be able to move (because the
unit may have to deal with angry women? Could these women be upgraded with pots
and pans to get a scythed bonus?

Please do not mention "rash" when discussing the loin cloth rule.
There is no historical evidence to suggest that the Comanche used
either pots or pans in combat. ;-)

The failure to include Texas Rangers, Captain Caul, and /or Captain
McRae makes me wonder what kind of archival research was done for this
list. No Rangers?
Time for a Spearpoint list.

I'm glad to hear it. One of my fellow players suggested that some
might actually take this seriously.
I responded, that no sane adult could take something with "John Wayne
as Jake Cutter", in it ... seriously.
Thanks ... g

Greg - I think you interpret my "No kidding" as "no, kidding."
You're wrong. And I'm fairly sure that I'm sane.

Great stuff Greg! It provided a much needed laugh while preparing
for work this afternoon. I am reminded of a humorus "Texan Army
list" that apeared on the WAB list a few years ago.
Don't worry yourself with being PC. I can't imagine even the most
uber-sensitive "minority victim complex" infected person or white
liberal "indian-phile" taking this even remotely serious. But then
again some folks seem to go out of their way to be offended (or I
would contend PRETEND to be offended to make a point)....:-(
Martin
now back to your usual list material...

Speaking as a member of the Cherokee Nation, and one quarter Cherokee, you
are being ridiculous.
