Jon,
Well, here goes my many questions about angled charges. I know you
are working on Rule 6.xx but this does fit into the angled charges
diragram under 6.1
I remember the open forum on whether angled charges should be allowed
to "gate swing" or only allow those elements that have the necessay
movement to actually contact, be allowed to contact. This one became
the preferred method of carrying out an angled attack. This was
preferred as it was perceived that the "trailing" elements were still
moving (charging?) and had not yet made contact with the enemy. But
does combat stop that movement? Or are the sweeping elements still
charging / impetuous etc when they contact this or next bound?
OK, so what happens if..........
Scenario.
Two units of infantry -
defender 2 elements wide x two elements deep
attacker 4 elements wide x two elelements deep.
Attacker is at 45 degrees to the front of the defender with the
attackers left most element point at maximum charge range to the
defender. As a counter charge will screw up this scenario, the
defender will stand to receive. At the charge, the front left most
point of one element of the attacker is able to contact the defender
so that element turns to face. The other three front rank elements
cannot reach so align to the from of the defender but stepped back 20
paces and are not in contact.
1. Attacker wins the combat and pushes the defender back. The
element in contact steps forward 40 paces and the attackers front
rank is now stepped forward 60 paces from the rest of the front rank.
a) When do the stepped back elements make contact? Now or next
bound?
b) If contact is next bound, do the trailing elements still
count charging / weapons at first contact bonuses?
c) If this bound, do bonuses in b) still count?
2. Attacker wins combat but defender does not recoil (pike). Would
be the same for equal result or choosing not to break off if no cpf
scored.
a) When do the stepped back elements make contact? Now or next
bound?
b) If contact is next bound, do the trailing elements still
count charging / weapons at first contact bonuses?
c) If this bound, do bonuses in b) still count?
3. Attacker loses the combat and the element in contact recoils 40
paces.
a) Does the defender, in it's follow-up move, contact the
stepped back elements?
b) If contact is is made, do the trailing elements still count
charging / weapons at first contact bonuses?
4. Change the scenario to having the attacker Hch or cav and they
elect to breakthrough the target.
a) Will the trailing elements also breakthrough?
Regardless of when the second element in each unit comes into combat,
they should be allowed to get whatever bonuses they are entitled to
as this is their first time in combat.
As you can see, the UNIT is now being broken down into elements, 1
contacts on charge, 2 contacts whenever while 3 and 4 form the
overlap. Starting to look VERY DBM-ish. :)
So, last questions;
A. If the attacking elements do not contact until NEXT bound, is the
attacking unit able to be charged by another unit? Or is it
protected as if it was convert charging?
B. If the attacking elements do not contact until next bound, do
they suffer an extra fatigue as if consecutive charges?
And on top of this, would the overlapping elements be able to convert
charge into a second unit if they come into contact with it while
stepping forward to CONFORM on the element in contact with the first
defender?
As you can see, I've had a quiet day at work...........
