Not so, I think. Believe me, it was the very first thing I looked at
months ago.
Consider 4-5 units of 6E Reg B LMI LTS,S,Sh (backed by smaller units
of real good attacking shock foot, something like 2HCT,JLS,Sh, that
you can't get at past the LTS,S,Sh)...
First off, there is the prep shooting to worry about. Without going
into skirmish (because you can usually at least force them to stay
in block) they can still literally outshoot any bow-armed cav that
get within range, and the bow-armed cav can't really touch them at
long range even if you get a fantasy situation where you are ganging
up on one unit.
So the only horsed threat to them is from from charging lancers. A
unit of L against them is typically going to start at 5 @ +5 or, if
impetuous, 5 @ +7. Only the latter is going to do a CPF to a 24-fig
unit, and that is before we start looking at all the deductions.
For openers there is an incredible support shot. At least 12 figs
are going to shoot at a 0, +1 or +2 depending on what kind of armor
you have. That amounts to 2, 3 or 4 CPF from support shooting. So
down 2, 3 or 4 plus possibly (unless super-heavy) another down 1 for
disorder.
Then you face the LTS which drops you another 2.
So you are, charging impetuously and on even rolls, SH 5 @ +3, EH 5
@ +1, or H 5 @ 0. Against the Incas who will be 6 @ +3, +4 or +5.
Not ideal, even for SHK. Of course they could fail their waver (1/6
chance) but I have found that _even then_ if you are not EH or SH
one unit rolling even will not cause a CPF in HtH. And this is much
less likely than them passing and hosing a charging mounted unit.
Tossing in 2 units of SHK would give you your 1 CPF, and by
splitting the support shot one of the units should get enough
casualties to win. But it is very close. And using 2 SHK units on
one of his 4-5 LMI units, with what he has waiting to hit you as you
push him back, is still not going to really work and is a huge
disparity in points invested.
Of course, there are some less direct tactical options - but all of
them I see depend on good HtH foot in conjuction with the mounted
and are tricky to work if the Reg B's can counter all the time.
Option 2: roll up 4 with Irreg A's. The basis of any good battle
plan!
