John,
I think Greg's comments are really good.
This is a "n00b's" perspective. I've finally settled on two armies I
am going to play for the next year or more, and am asking the same
questions about the list I chose to run when looking over the one you
posted.
Does it fit your style of play? I don't know what "style" you favor,
but for me it's a primary concern (although theres a great lesson to
be learned in recognizing that your style may not fit the army you've
chosen to play).
Is it balanced? Does it have to be balanced? If it's not balanced,
can that be overcome or comepensated for? Does the list you have fit
your style of play?
What is the purpose of each unit? Are there better units in the list
that can fulfill that same purpose? If yes, why not purchase them
instead (Such as Bulgars over the Pechengs?)
To me, the Varangians are the "strike" infantry, but there's not a
lot of them. And the fact they are Irr C to me means I'd have to
work extra hard to make sure they could get a charge off without
being uneasy (although that has a large part to do with what your
opponent brings to the table IMO). MI JLS, from my expierence at
least, screams out "Knights charge here!", and against well armed
loose order foot (Moogs and the like) they aren't going to last to
long.
On the other hand, the lack of any "heavy" Mounted in this list also
means (at least to me) that an opponent with Knights can ignore the
large close order foot blocks and aim for the Varangians. If theres
a way to use Close order foot to mask and protect Loose Order foot,
I'd like to learn it.
Personally, I like the larger block of Russ Spear with B in the back
rank. Used wisely, you could split fire and protect some of the
Varangians, and it's going to take at least two enemy units to do
anything to it.
Having played Late Romans the past year has shown me the limitations
of what JLS armed HC can do (which IMO is not a whole lot). It can
run off LI and LC pretty easily, and well used can often tie up a
couple of units, but anything with Armor and a L is going to eat them
for lunch, right?
What are your terrain picks when you use this army? And why choose
them?
I must say I do like these lists posts though, it's noce to see
everyone elses opinions on them.

I also like the list posts Todd.
It seems like very useful data, even if you don't agree with it. Then
again, I coach football, and most football coaches are input junkies.
I like to keep in mind that of the last ten Super Bowl winners, you
can probably count five or so radically different offences, and five
or so radically different defenses.
There is more than one way to win at ANYTHING, and the practical
coach/player is the one that picks and chooses what is right for HIS
TEAM, rather than trying to do everything imaginable.

I found that out the hard way running Late Romans. I
tiried making them be something they weren't (A Shock
Cav Army for instance, than a "Shooting Army". I've
never been quite comforatble running them, but I won
the figs I use at the very first Warrior Tournament I
played in, and thelist has a mix of everyhting, which
forced me to learn the rules faster.
Right now I am playing cloose order Araucanians.
Lot's of Irr LTS, B, mostly close order and some loose
order.
No mounted. Everyhting marches on 2's.
It's kinda nice actually. So far I am 50% with it,
which is better than I was with the Late Romans.

Well Todd ... the good news might be that you get better with lists
after a bit more experience ... the bad news might be that you don't
get all THAT much better. ;-)
At Fort Worth Wars, I trotted out my first new army in about six
years: Italian Condotta. Not that big a troop type departure from
what I'm used to, but an army with very different victory conditions.
I botched my list so bad, I felt like I spent the entire tournament
knee deep in mud.
At any rate ... thanks for the info. :-)

Todd, Ewan, Greg, Mark, Mark, and Kelly et al,
I have really enjoyed reading the comments so far. Russ have always been a
favorite of mine, and I am regularly tweaking at different lists. My first trip
to San Antonio to enter the ranks of Warrior gamers was using Russ, and I have
the figures to field everything allowed on their lists except for the wagon
laagers. My first favorite list is that which focuses on big blocks of Russ
with bows in the back and as many 4E units of Bulgar HC as I can buy. The list
I posted was one I've been playing with to try out new options.
I especially agree with the discussion about choosing an army you like that fits
your playing style. I tend to like armies with large quantities of infantry and
rarely have mounted heavier than HC. I then make my choice based on history
that interests me. Its nice to win, but I gotta have some history to turn me on
to an army. Just finished a bunch of reading on the Biblical era, hence the
debut and demis e of my Hebrews at FWW. Russ and Han Chinese have always been
my two favorites, although there is one more moving up. I'm on my third Stephen
Turnbull book and just about to drop the cash for some new lead.
Back to the list discussions. I enjoy reading about anyone's lists and tactics
just because it gives me ideas and adds more vicarious enjoyment to the hobby.
I especially like the tactical advice since it gives different perspectives on
units. No worries on bluntness Greg, I like straight shooting. Personally I
would like to see more discussions of games, lists, and tactics.
On the tactical side, another question for discusion, assuming anyone gets
through my longwindedness above. Any thoughts on the merits of 2HCW vs 2HCT for
arming loose order foot?

Concerning 2HCT vs. 2 HCW, persoanlly, I'd go with the
2HCT. The -1 in combat your opponent gets when facing
you can often be the difference in winning a Hth
Combat.

Harlan,
It's looking like Charles, Steve and myself won't be coming after all.

I have this army in 15mm and 25mm. I would max my Russ spear, minimize
the
varangians. Mix the varangian command in small units behind the Russ
spear
to counter attack. Get rid of the Pechnegs and us Bulgars. The lancers
are
much more useful and keep the LC Ds.
Success depends on how well you coordinate the push with your close order
spear and counterattacks with the Varangians while the Bulgars stretch the
flank.
When and where is ROTC? 15mm or 25mm? Could be worth a road trip.

John,
The first die hit the table top at 8:30 not 8:31. Please remember that
registration starts at 8:00, although, I received your list and I plan to
review it this weekend.

Harlan,
Your a great guy. Sadly for you, I was even going to play an army lacking
flaming pigs, 3 feet of ditched palisades, and cheesey flaming arrows. Oh well,
I guess we'll have to wait til next time. Make sure the lap dancer is a
brunette, I seem to like'em that way! Actually, nowadays I'll tak'em most anyway
as long as they are human, female, and don't outweigh me! :)
