Given Frank's catagories:
Shock/Skirmish/Missile/Line/Terrain
If we assign a school grade to each aspect of the army (A,B,C,D,F),
then total and average these based upon the following relationship:
A=4 Strong with no weakness in role
B=3 Good with some weakness in role
C=2 Average in role
D=1 Poor in role
F=0 Worthless in role
The average score would give us a range for the armies. For example,
the 1st Crusader by the above would rate as follows:
Shock = B or 3
Skirmish = C or 2
Missile = D or 1
Line = C or 2
Terrain = B or 3
Overall = 2.2 out of 4.0
Any thoughts?

Just for fun...
Early Hoplite Greek Rated
Shock:
F (they can have 20 or so HC JLS but that's about it)
Skirmish:
D (very limited in their LI compared to the Late list)
Missile:
F (Missile, what's that? -- they can have 12 LI Cretans and a couple of
Athenian LC B...)
Line:
B (All HI LTS JLS but still outclassed by medieval/roman armies with HI
2HCT, HTW, or other variants)
Terrain:
D (Some Thracians, some lights, not much else).
Late Hoplite Greek Rated:
Shock:
F/C (F is 'pure' Greek with 22 HC, C if use Syracusan allies with Irreg A
JLS Sh Celts and additional Cavalry)
Skirmish:
B/A (Lots of lights -- 100 JLS Sh, 12 Archers, 24 Slingers. No or very
limited loose order skirmishers. In the very late army goes to A as large
numbers of Peltasts are available in addition to the LI)
Missile:
F/C (see above for F. If take the Phokian option (6 Bolt Thrower artillery)
it goes to a C)
Line:
B (see above for limitations against optimized types. Call it a B+ with
Syracusan allies as there are 24 LMI HTW Spaniards to provide support for
the Hoplites against optimized enemy line troops)
Terrain:
C (lots of lights, a reasonable number of loose order. Not enough regulars
for optimum 3 unit woods clearing groups).

I think there should be one more category. My name for these troops is 'closer'
(said like the type of pitcher....)
A Reg EHC with a general is a good example. Too many things out there kill you
if you get in first/try to be a shock troop, but you are just the guy to finish
someone off who is alread involved or screened.

I am learning (the hard way as it were) A lot of the
Later Roman Cav falls into this category, ecspecially
against Medieval Knight armies. From looking at the
Imperial Warrior Lists, I would say almost all the
Roman (and Roman Allies) Cav falls into the "Closer"
category.

I'd still put EHC in the shock category...not as high as knights .
But, your secondary hit role is still a shock role...and they still
have the 160p tactical move and Lance.
