Okay, I know this will be bled all over, but here is yet another
rendition of an army I am interested in perhaps playing. I keep coming
back to these for some reason when I am fiddling with my HYWE list.

Late French Ordonnance
13u @1599

1x CinC/Ordonnance Gendarmes 2E Reg B SHK L,Sh (PA) @ 230

1x Sub-general/Coustilliers 2E Reg B 1SHK/1HC L,Sh (P) @ 133

5x Ordonnance Gendarmes/Coustilliers 2E Reg B 1SHK/1HC L,Sh @ 103
2x Ordonnance Bowmen 6E Reg B 3HI/3MI LB @ 154
1x Francs Archers 8E Irr D LMI LB @ 49
(split these 8 units 4 each to the 2 French generals)

1x Swiss Ally-general/Infantry 6E Reg 1A/5B 2LHI/4LMI 4P/22HCT @ 192
1x Swiss Infantry 6E Reg B 2LHI/4LMI 4P/22HCT @ 130
1x Swiss Hand-gunners 4E Reg B LI HG @ 42

Strengths (in order of what I like about them):
Good numerous and cost-effective shock power from
Gendarmes/Coustilliers.
Good (esp. anti-armor) missile capability from mostly waver-proof Bowmen
and even a bit from Skirmish Handguns.
Good line troops in form of decent number of real nice Swiss Infantry -
the kind of line troop that can actually get into combat.

Weaknesses (in order of significance I think):
Teeny, tiny frontage if SHK are kept in second line.
No bad-terrain troops.
Not enough light troops to keep enemy skirmishers off Bowmen (and Swiss
though the latter can at least be screened by the Hand-gunners).
Shield-less Bowmen who can not skirmish. Played around with making them
front-EHI on horses but then you don't get enough other good stuff.
Francs Bowmen are a juicy target. They are probably going to sit force
marched off on a flank and occupy someone for as long as it takes to
break them.

Overall, though, I think they could be playable - and I keep being
intrigued by the idea of front-rank up-armoring (EHI) and mounting the
Bows which makes them fairly invulnerable until they tire.
I would also consider, briefly, using the Irr D as a force-marched
screen in front of the French in the _center_ and just hope I pass all
the wavers for seeing them rout. What the hey, as long as you have to
have a bunch of A & B class might as well use that high morale.

I'm also playing with this list, but I'm running as much LHI CB as
possible with no ally and one 1 unit of mimimum close order B.

Problems as I see it in order:
1. Close order bow will fire off one shot which will not halt the
enemy IrgB LMI 2HCT/J/sh guys that will rout the bowmen on contact.
Their best option is to sit a hill or flank march as a single unit.
2. You have nothing to shoo away enemy LI, so the swiss will never
see combat on their terms.
3. You have nothing to shoo away enemy LC, so the SHK will get shot
tired and become ineffective.
4. You have too many kniggits so will be temped to use them for
everything offensive. Being regular they will get there, but they
will not crush on contact like IrgA SHK types. Care must be used
even when weilding a big soft hammer.

What is your battleplan?
If I had to run this army. I would flankmarch the close order bow or
put them 120 paces away from anyone else. Throw a minor water
feature and some woods. Hunker down in column and try to contest the
crossing of the river with the Swiss and/or SHK. Use the Franc
archers as a lure. If the terrain didn't work out, I would probably
forcemarch the entire army (if not outscouted which is possible)and
just try to put all the SHK into as tight a schwerpunkt as possible
right away. maybe a routing something will cause lots of shakes :)

After you loose the two close order bow units in HTH, and loose order
archers shake and 3 SHK units from compensating for lack of LC or LI,
you will have to go on the defense since with 13 units 1 more shake
or rout to loose the game. You must be careful.

Might I be so bold as to suggest you drop to the mimium MI LB. Pick
up 3 units of 6E RgC/D LHI CB/sh CB at the cost of 2 SHK units. Buy
all the LI S and give the front rank sh. Buy a unit of LI J/sh for
killing enemy LI B and/or delaying in terrain. Don't bother with LMI
J/sh, as you don't want to get into a terrain battle your army can't
support; just slow him down in the terrain while you fight
elsewhere. You might consider upgrading your MI to HC playing the
later list and give them a JLS where possible. The HC can at least
skirmish and take shooting away from the SHK as they set for attack,
and they can possibly chase down enemy LC.
