So I'm in the middle of building my first 15mm Warrior army (Later
Crusader) and now I'm looking to build a 25/28mm army for versatility
(being able to play either).
Armies I'm interested in (using a combination of good looking
figures, interest in the period and not an army I'm already building
in another scale/system)
Mongols
Song Chinese
Saracen/Seljuk Turk
Hundred Years War (English or Free Company)
Polybian Roman
Sassanid Persian
----------------
Mainly I am just looking for advice on what a decent fun army out of
those would be. I'd like it to not be horrible in battle but mainly I
am looking for something fun and interesting because it will most
likely be my one 28/25mm warrior army for a while so I don't want to
get to sick of it. Any advice on how these play or what difficulties
they face would be wonderful.
Thanks,
Brinton

A few questions so everyone can make better recommendations:
What part of the country are you in and are you willing to travel to
Jacksonville FL or Rochester NY for your 25 mm games?
What style of play do you prefer, superior cav, knights, irregular foot,
elephants, regular foot, or the new fashion in Jacksonville, ID foot?
Are you painting this army yourself, and if so do you want an army that is
easy or challenging to paint?
Are you on a tight budget (20 point knights are a good bang for the buck) or
are finances unlimited (a light chariot army?)?
Do you have a preference for figure manufacturer?

They all look like fin choices - I particularly like Mongol and
Sassanid, though 100yw is a mighty army.
Mongols are super manouverable and have a lot of interisting
auxiliaries.
Sassanids are like a lolly shop to a little child - you just can't
fit all that you would like into the given points.
Both of the above look great - I think Gripping Beast make lovely
Sassanids, though I am not sure what the best Mongol figures are in
25mm.
I doubt whether you would ever get sick of Sassanids.

Brinton,
If I were a new player looking for an army to play, I would suggest
looking for an army that is forgiving. That is, I suggest an army with a mix of
Regulars and irregulars. Reg Lights will help you get out of jams as they can
counter out of harms way and Irregular units of heavy units will charge harder
without the need of having extra generals (in the case of mounted Regs). One
army that comes to mind on the Regular side of the pendulum is the knights of
saint John. My friend, Greg Regets has never lost with them and My bud Todd
Kaeser won with them in the Open at Historicon as I recall. In the hand of a
skilled player, they can choose their match-ups and usually come out on top. But
I noticed that you chose Sassanids, these are a long time favorite of mine and
they have that wonderful mix of regs and irregs that I spoke of earlier. Overall
I would go with the Sassanids as it can be morphed into many different
combinations though. Good luck and welcome to Warrior (actually
you've been here for a while, but I just wanted to say that!) :-)

Adrian's point on Sassanids is a good one: they're probably one of the
best 2500 point armies around . But, they're able to bre pretty
forgiving, and they have both interesting figures and an ability to morph
into other interesting armies with varying degrees of realism.. (Timurids
come to mind..)
The Turks are perhaps the least forgiving for a relatively new player, so
they'd be the one I did not recommend. Mongols will be frustrating but
rewarding, and they're probably be next-to-bottom on my list; I think that
the learning curve might be too steep to be optimal. Song has a much
shallower curve but probably a lower peak to that curve. I'd probably
recommend HYW; not too many troop types, but a range of interesting
tactics, and most parts of the game - manouvre, missile fire, shock
troops, terrain - will be important; it should also be fairly forgiving
and of great historical interest.

I have a bit of the same situation going on. When I build an army,
I'm pretty much stuck with it for about five or six years.
As a result, I would almost always recommend a Medieval army, because
you can usually add a few units, change a few flags, and field a
completely different army with completely different victory
conditions.
That said, in my opinion I find English Hundred Years War and Free
Company highly boring armies to play. If you are sold on the power of
the 2HCW/LB armed battle line, I would suggest an army that gets
some, like Medieval Spanish, Italian Condotta, or Burgundian Ord.,
but that also gives you a bit more variety in it's support troops.
If none of that makes sense, you can always just say you want a man's
army, with cavalry and infantry ... not some overrated, ten elephant
having, unlimited incendiary buying, scythed chariot fielding, no
minimus army with thirty lines of list rules and units made for point
optimization rather than historical accuracy.
Where is the glory in winning, with an army like that? ;-)

I don't know what I want in an army in game terms (reg, irr, 2HCW/LB
battle line) really because I have no real experience with WRG and
only 2 games of warrior. The armies I listed were picked with no
knowledge of how they'll perform in Warrior and instead were based on
interest in the period, interest in the miniatures and interest in the
historical tactics and battles they fought. I am building a later
crusader warrior army in 15mm so I have at least one knight army. I'm
looking for some versatility in either the list or how they perform on
the battlefield mainly. I'm also interested in if historical tactics
would give good results for the armies in question.
So Saracens are out due to a comment about being unforgiving for a
beginner and I'm figuring Song Chinese are out as well (less of an
interest on my side as well).
I'm interested to know why "Mongols will be frustrating but
rewarding" because that is a period I am very interested in and there
are some good figures for them (Ebob, Assault group).
Sassasnid Persians are currently the front runner but I am not as
passionate about there history. I really like A&A's line of miniatures
and the versatility is there it sounds like. I have a decent interest
in the period though so it should be fine.
Hundred Year Wars is another period that's good for me history wise
and I really like the Perry Brothers miniatures. There was a
suggestion to use other Medieval lists with more variety in the
support troops but I don't have as much interest in the period
(Condotta, Burgundian Ordnance) (something I need to paint so many of
the little guys). I said English or Free Company because its hard for
me to support the French in that war after a viewing of Henry V as a
child.
Any thoughts on Polybian Romans?
To answer Jamie's questions I live in Southern California (Los
Angeles) and I probably wouldn't be traveling to New York or Florida
for my 25mm games. I don't know how many people play 25mm on this
coast but I figured for conventions and such it would be good to have
the army.
I assume the Knights of St. John that was recommended is covering the
later part of their history? What are the miniature manufacturers or
are they similar enough to later crusaders? From what I've seen they
don't spark my interest to much (don't get me wrong, my Later Crusader
army will definitely have Hospitalers, I just lose interest after 3rd
crusade).
Thanks for the continuing help.
Brinton
