I do not think this one was thought through. If you need 3-1 to break through, then LI can break through 12 ranks of SHI by rolling a down 3. Then you must consider a 3-1 on a flank shot, allowing a unit to "teleport" 360 paces.

I have a stack of notes I am working through about a foot high. On one of those pages is a reminder to change 11.2 to allow the player to break through from the rear. The current draft on the egroup is not as up to date as this stack of fixes. However, if a question is asked of me here I always answer with what I know the rule WILL BE, regardless of what the egroup draft says.
This gives players a glimpse into the future. I could have said nothing or regurgitated the rule as written there, but that would not seem to be very helpful or truthful.

Phil,
I think the rules on break through limit it to Cav breaking through infantry
and also specifically do not allow breakthroughs from one flank to another
because of the "360 pace teleport".
Check me out on this but I am pretty sure.

Chris,
As far as the rules I have, 7.6, Current Warrior, there is no mention of Cavalry vs Infantry. Indeed there is some historical evidence of infantry units maintaining order and "cutting their way out" I was referring to Jon's comment that the break though rules being expanded to count rear to front. I agree that breakthrough flank to flank is a total absurdity.

You should mention that chariots breakthrough any unsteady troops, or loose or open order unless the chariots themselves have been pushed back or routed. No 3-1 required.
Phil
Yep, Ed is correct. ANY unit that does x3 damage can break through.
For chariots, it's about the only way to save them from getting creamed in the next bound.

No, there is no restriction to mounted only. Any body may break through
if they do 3 times received w/o opponents breaking in hth. (11.2)

Phil,
Yes, quite correct. I should have mentioned that. Sorrow. :(
