Hi all
I've just managed to find some time to give the full details of the
warrior competition just held in Australia. I've put some photos on
the site but there are more to come and I've got to edit the titles
(change them from jpgnumbers)There were 17 entrants and here is the
finishing table
1. Mike Morgan (tibetan) 24 points
2. Paul Collins ( medieval german princes)23 points
3. Darren Holmes ( Eastern Han)21 points
4. John Harris (feudal french) 21 points
5. Leigh Dunn (Scots Isles) 18 points
6. John Ball (bedouin tribes{middianite}) 17 points
7. Mark Ball (early polish)17 points
8. Barry Hayes(magyar) 16 points
9. Paul Rattray (early byzantine) 16 points
10.Ian Poade (nikephorian byzantine) 15 points
11.Adrian Williams (bactrian greek) 15 points
12.Paul Koschel (ghaznavid) 13 points
13.Guy Sheppard (later hungarian) 13 points
14.Steve Honeyman (khitan liao) 11 points
15.Danny Zaia (early polish) 10 points
16.Gerry Hearn (feudal spanish) 10 points
17.Murray Evans (arurcanian) 10 points

This was, as I posted earlier, a great comp where all players were a
pleasure to play against, win or lose, and was hard fought. Murray
only could play for 2 days but certainly was no push over with those
chileans.
Our next Australian comps are in Newcastle in April (Biblical
Warrior) and the Blue Mountains in June (Fast Warrior Partners)
Thanks to the Four Horsemen for their donation of the prize vouchers
and for all the hard work on the gmae system
Mike Morgan

Mike,

Hello. As you may remember I used to play a lot of 7th Edition. I
saw Warrior at CanCOn and it looked interesting. How does it play
compared to 7th. I notice that there are a lot of cavalry armies in
the comp list. Is it fair to say that the balance of armies is
towards cavalry at the moment?

thanks

Scott

Thank you for posting the pictures and information. It looks and
sounds as if you guys had a great time!

As far as infantry/cavalry ... the scale and event factor in, but not
as much as the player's own taste.

If I was giving advice, it would be to play whatever type of army
makes you feel in control of the battle, be that the movement,
scouting advantage and battle location advantage of cavalry, or the
aggressive defense and missile power of an infantry army.

That may not be great advice, but it is first rate double-talk.

Hi

another factor that might affect this is that here in oz we havent
played with the rank and a half of lance for as long. In my humble
impression there has been a bit of a shift in game balance. Not so
much away from infantry (long spear and missile armed foot are
probably more popular than ever) but away from infantry that dont
fare well against cavalry (jls or htw types). I think this an
understandable trend as virtually every army you encounter in
competition (especially in the top half of the comp) has at least 3
or 4 units of lance armed cavalry of some type and many have
considerably more. The dark age warrior comp we played is a
particularly stark illustration of this. Despite selecting our army
from a book of lists absolutely teeming with powerful warband
infantry armies in a 4 round competition I played 3 feudal spanish
armies (presumably as they were the only army in the book that could
have EHK). The army I was fortunate enough to win with was Pre feudal
scot (ie longspears galore). The chief exception to this trend is
that these jls or htw troops are still considered more viable when
they exist in an army with ample lancers of its own to protect them
(such as the moogs with the chivalry of spain to ride shotgun for
them) Whether this trend is a bad thing is another issue entirely. We
are for instance seeing a wider range of medieval armies in
particular here in Australia now that people see no need to limit
their choice to armies with wedge. It might just be a while till I
get out my vikings or celtiberians (at least in competition anyway)

I think this is a result of two issues.

1. Universally and across time periods, armies are better the more 'combined
arms' they are. Just a fact of life.

2. Newer players have more trouble than veterans getting off impetuous LMI
charges.

Looking at the list below I see Kniggits and LMI. Some other stuff,
but mostly looks like a kniggit cycle down under right now...

"Balls Forward" award has to go to John Ball for running that many
shieldless M camels.

24X3=72 so they are hard to break on the first bound
