I think Bill Chamis and I faced a Late Imperial Roman army at Cold Wars in 2003,
but otherwise I don't think I've seen LIR in tournament play since the Four
Horsemen took the helm.
My hunch is there are two reasons for this. First, I think Dave Markowitz is
dead on: a great virtue of the list is its diversity, and the one list format
makes that much less of a value. It's very hard to put together a solid
anti-knight version and a solid anti-pike/elephant version at the same time.
Second, I think this is a reaction to the change in Lance. With all lance-armed
cavalry fighting in a rank and a half, there is a perception that Romans are
vulnerable to a wider range of armies now, and thus a bit less viable.
We did go through a couple of years in Lancaster when knight armies were really
in favor, and in the inevitable paper-scissors-rock dance that puts Roman
armies in decline. Pike/elephant armies -- the natural antidote to knights --
seem to be on the ascension once again, so Romans must surely follow before too
much longer.

Where is this? You should buy a Khmer army. That would straighten out your
quality players real quick. :)
Most of the skilled players down here play armies based around
cavalry lancers, primarily mounted, armored knights ... and you have
to admit, a LIR army that spends eighty percent of it's points on
triple-armed Legionaries and Auxilia, is going to find tough sledding.
Knight armies are the reason Roman armies learn to use counters.

Good Evening Derek ...
I don't think it is so much an attitude against these troop types, as
a realization that many people make armies intended to play against
people in their own area.
Yes, triple-armed Legionaries are great against elephants ... but
that does me very little good as a player, as none of the quality
players in my area would be caught dead playing elephant based
armies. We just aren't into that sort of thing down here.

I do thank you for the opinions though. As a dedicated input junky, I
do appreciate it ... especially from someone with such a lofty
reputation.

Well done. He asked for it and you gave him a lesson in smack talk.
Let's leave it at that, however.
I will say I'd buy a ticket to see this settled the only way it can be - on
the table.

The opportunity to introduce elephants to central Texas may exist. The open
terrain there might be just right They are one my painting list (behind
Samurai for myself and Orcs for my son) eventually.

Absolutely meant in good fun Jon ... :-)
If you really want an example of manly bravery from this area, look
no further than Bill "The Greek" Chris, who has played for the better
part of fifteen years with Greek Hoplites (the one's without the new
list rules) in an area where every tournament was an exercise in
playing six to ten SHK and shock barbarian foot based armies.
When the new list rules came out for Hop-a-longs ... Bill actually
shouted for joy, having found a purpose for those 19,234 unpainted
Hoplite figures he still owns.
Credit to FHE for an excellent use of list rules to give a previously
underpowered army, a fighting chance!!
Thanks ... g
