I think the suggestion for community terrain is not only a great idea but is
also very actionable.
I would be willing to donate to a fund to produce the terrain and can not
believe that a sufficient number of others on this list would not contribute
also.
I, for one, would love the chance to compete at the major miniature cons with
good looking and preset terrain.
If 100 members of this list, a small fraction of the total, were to contribute
$10 to the fund, this would give working capital of $1,000, more than enough
start the project off right.
Funds could be donated through the FHE Warrior sales web site for ease of use.
Admin of the fund and product would need to be worked out, but is a minor issue.
Nothing to say that a similar fund can not be started to produce the figures
needed for large-scale historical battles.
Larger local clubs have done this for years. The internet has changed the very
definition of "local" and I think it is time to move farther along in this
direction.
I say lets kick this around and then do it.

I would donate $10 too. But if it will be an FHE managed terrain set, then
we owe you a plan on how we'd acquire, store and use the terrain - let me get
something together.

Jon,
I think that is a wonderful idea. I would like to be the first to pledge
$10.00.

We don't buy much per se, but have experimented a fair amount in an effort to
turn out better stuff than felt. German railroad accessories seem to make
the best looking terrain. But of course that has to be purchased.

As part of a group in Dallas known as the Thursday Night Irregulars,
this is how we were able to buy quality terrain for our weekly gaming
nights. We also used the terrain at conventions to put on events.
All in all a good thing.

Up here at Deep Strike (www.deep-strike.com) we're testing out some ways to
make cheap pretty hills. Once we have some samples I'll take pictures and
post them. A donation to this cause shouldn't be a problem.
General Question: How many people actually purchase pretty terrain for their
games?

I do, and am trying to learn techniques to make my own.

What I'm experimenting with for hills is the following:
1. Get a bucket of sand. Make it damp.
2. Get some rocks (or equivalent) - stick them into the side of the sand.
3. Mix up and poor in a plaster-cement (we use something called Rockcrete
which is a gypsum plaster that dries HARD unlike normal plaster).
4. When done pull out the hill. Glue it to a piece of masonite (or thick
plastic) and use a belt sander or equivalent to round off the edges of the
base.
5. Paint/flock to taste.
I'll let the list know how it comes out.

The organizers of the DBM International Team Challenge have provided
terrain for years.
They used carpet squares cut on a pattern.
For hills they glued and stapled decreasing sized pieces on top of the
hill.
There were 8 or 10 boxes of terrain, all boxes the same, containing
hills, brush/rock, woods, roads, rivers, etc. One box was shared by
four tables.

I guess my question is what do you mean by "purchased"?
I am the terrain taskmaster in that I won't let our group stack books or use
cotton or some such nonsense for the terrain - my feeling is that if you
have the patience to paint your miniatures (or money to have them painted
for you) then you can take some time to make realistic terrain (or buy it).
Personally I enjoy making it, so I do.
The key to making terrain and having fun: a group of you to help and beer -
I homebrew beer, so usually this happens at my house.
Starting with the playing field: We bought a canvas drop cloth from Home
Depot for about $6. We then stretched it out flat and tacked it down (raw
canvas will shrink if you don't hold it in shape somehow). Rolled contact
cement all over it (PLEASE DO THIS OUTSIDE or in the garage with the door
open). Let it set for a bit and sprinkled Woodland Scenics (WS) fine turf
(there are several colors to choose from and we used three colors per
cloth - these run about $3 a bag and one bag goes pretty far). If you get
any thin areas, you can go back over it with spray adhesive and more turf.
When the cement has set we spray it with watered down PVS (elmer's) and that
sets it in place and makes it very durable. If after some time, you do wear
a place in it - it's pretty easy to go back and add more turf. We then roll
this up to store it.
We buy the WS stuff and make our own trees, etc. We mount them in clumps on
a masonite 2"-3" base, ballast them and add rocks, spray paint the whole
shebang with the camouflage brown rustoleum (again about $3) dry brush
lighter browns and ivory whites onto the base and add undergrowth and
foliage. We create the "boundry" to Warrior specifications with canvas drop
cloth cut to correct sizes, apply WS fine turf to it (using Borden's spray
adhesive - i.e. rubber cement) after two or three layers of turf, we spray
it with watered down PVS (Elmer's) to set the grass. We arrange various
sized bases on the boundary to create the correct woods, orchard, etc. We
have been very pleased with the effect while maintaining flexibility for
movement.
We make our hills by sculpting (sanding, actually) Styrofoam gluing it to
masonite (for strength and stability), coat it with WS flex paste (so we can
spray paint it without melting the foam), then gluing WS turf to it and
coating it with watered down PVS glue - by the time we are finished with
them they are practically indestructible and they look good. Rock faces are
cut into it with a kitchen knife before applying the flex paste then
painted.
My big project: I am creating a Built Up Area right now with model
buildings that I am creating with acid free foamcore held together with acid
free masking tape (acid free is key to longevity) - coating it with gesso
(2-3 layers) then coloring it with washes. I made a modular base out of
thin plywood and with "city blocks" that can be added to or subtracted from.
The streets (it is a classical Greek / Roman city) are created with
patterned sheet styrene (which was also used for the roofs to some of the
buildings), fine ballast applied to the edges of the street with areas being
left for the buildings to be arranged upon. This, however, is a big (but
fun) project that involves a certain amount of architectural history
research and lots of patience - not for the faint of heart!
The key to our terrain "system" are the bases that the model trees,
buildings, etc. are arranged upon - be it plywood or canvas. They are made
to Warrior specs. If you are on the base you are in that terrain type. By
the time we were done, we spent maybe $100 total and had a great deal of
terrain to show for it. That dollar amount does exclude the Built Up Area
that I am making on my own - which is probably another $50-$100. But that
project could be undertaken fairly inexpensively with some creative
substitutions for materials. Everything that I have described is pretty
easy to create - just use the X-acto knives early in the evening as beer and
sharp knives don't mix well (something I learned early in my college
career).
As you can tell, I have strong feelings about crappy looking terrain and go
to some lengths to avoid it ;-)

This last Cold Wars I discovered the latex terrain of the
Battlefields Designs people. Personally, I found that although more
pricy than making it myself, the cost was well worth the saving in
time on some of the more annoying to make terrain peices.
Their rivers in particular look great and I hated working with the
liquid river creation stuff sold in train/hobby stores.
So for me, basically hills I make, more complex pieces I am willing
to invest, particularly in easy to store/hard to destroy stuff.
Hopefully it holds up as well as I hope.

Hang on...lol We need to work out what the 'rules' will be so folks are
confident they will get their money's worth (rules as in who will maintain and
store it, what cons will it go to, how do folks get access to it, etc.).....
