Chris overstates the case with the word 'wasted' methinks...lol How long
that takes is tied to both experience and preparation. If you are going to use
14.3, you would need to know what kind of terrain you want to fight on for each
type of opponent. If you are thinking about that in any serious way only
after you learn who you are fighting, yes, that would add time to a game...
In NASAMW events, like the nationals, using the 14.3 terrain rules isn't a
big deal because of the experience level of the players. Where I would
recommend preset terrain is in a local tourney where there are relatively new
players
who are still learning the game and have not yet gotten to the point where
they can cruise through 14.3 quickly.

I play Warrior in Australia, having played 7th here since about 1989
(aged 13).
It has been interesting to be on the list and gather bits of
information about US Tournaments, especially as we are coming up to
our National Championships in Canberra on 24-26 January.
Our format is 15mm, 1500 points, 6 by 4 tables, one list and terrain
fixed by organisers.
In discussions of the prospects of various armies for tournaments
terrain is discussed a lot.
Am I correct in observing that usually in your tournaments the
players bring terrain and role for it as per the rules?

Several of our fine local gamers who have been putting on
tournaments in other game systems have been using the pre-placed
terrain heavily, even coming up with special rules to go with
different tables/terrain. Takes much more effort, but the results
are faster games and more enjoyable tournaments, IMHO.

The main issue I would see is that pre-set terrain would limit many
armies if it was seen as consistently being either very open or very
closed. Ours tend to be seen as very closed.
Having players roll would open up the number of armies perceived as
playable.

Adrian,
That is usually the case here in the States. Green Felt for everyone!

Wow,
What a great concept! It sure would be cool to have that in place for the
next tournament! I recall Darrell Smith used to do that all the time back in the
good old days when we play the St. Louis Horse Archer tournaments. Those were
fast set-ups and even faster results with the losing LC in a fight having to
flee and usually ending up being caught and routed!
