Mr. Cleaves has asked for a definition, and I thus provide one.
Counter Punch:
The strategy by where one applies an initial pressure to the opponent, the
opponent reacts with a particular attack, and then you attack his attackers
with your "counter punch".
If you do not force an offensive reaction from your opponent, then he or she
is free to make the attack he or she wishes to....and you have no counter
punch situation.
An example would be that you roll your light infantry and light cavalry up
to your opponent's line and start shooting, perhaps you charge an
unsupported bit of lights. You have designed your screen of lights to be
generally superior to lights they may encounter, thus you begin pushing your
opponent's such troops back, or putting fatigue on his real shock troops.
Now, your opponent must attack your lights, or lose significant points or
capabilities to their charges and shooting.
Once that occurs, you have your reserve of shock troops that you can now
apply against his or her original attackers, who hopefully are tired and/or
disordered. Perhaps you can reach a flank if his or her line is now
staggered.
That is a form of counter-punching.
The key is to note that if you don't have active initial pressure, you don't
force your opponent to do anything, and then can't punch against their punch
(the counter punch).
