Greg makes an excellent point here. When I first started tinkering with the Nike
list, I had written up a version buying every possible sling figure, all the
bolt shooters, no SHC, no Varangians.... it was starting to look a little bit
like an Inca list with some cav sprinkled in.
But the thing that makes it appealing is also the thing that makes it hard to
do: on the one hand, it's exotic enough that opponents won't be able to easily
fit it into a type; on the other hand it's exotic enough that I can't really
reuse figures from any of my other armies to do it. This is one of the reasons
I've never done an army like Midianite or Burmese: what _else_ would I use the
figures for? Nothing.
As I type this, of course, I'm realizing that my 25mm bias is showing. Greg, as
I recall, is primarily a 15mm player. Doing an army or a set of figures on a
whim is much less expensive and requires much less painting time in 15mm. When I
played in that scale I had two armies that I painted up just because they were a
blast to play. Neither was particularly strong as a tournament army, and neither
really overlapped figures with much else that I had. One was Grenadine, the
other was Post Mongol Russian. In 15mm that kind of thing is possible; in 25mm,
not really.
