<< 4.51 Retreat: We have one player who is not getting the proper feel of
retreat orders. He is reading the wording a little loosly IMHO, but while
we understand them just fine as is, I suggest the following clarifying
wording.

(bullet 1) Must try to leave the table by the quickest route to own table
edge using retirement moves or march moves. If both types of moves would be
otherwise legal, the body MUST make a retirement move and as many march
moves as possible in a given bound. Flank marching troops retreat to the
table edge of arrival.

This drives the point home.

(bullet 4) Only troops withing enemy charge reach can attempt to counter.

This stops all the "counter cheese" to prevent having to retire. It also
allows retreating troops who are within (not just approached to) charge
reach to counter out. >>

And here we go again.....
When these rules first came out, this was simple and elegant. Troops knew
that their job was to either hold position or advance on the enemy, and they
could do so freely within the parameter of their orders.
If you, as the CinC, wanted them to do something else, (Like - TURN
AROUND- THEY'RE BEHIND YOU!), you either had to send a message to them (a
retirement) (difficult, as your time was very limited in the heat of battle),
or count on the unit commander to recognise the situation and respond- a
counter (also difficult- never a sure thing, especially with mediocre troops).
So, the definition was obvious - IF IT WASNT A LEGAL APPROACH, IT COULD BE
A COUNTER OR RETIREMENT.
Unfortunately, down through the years we have seen the need to transform
the simple and elegant to confused and ugly.
I played one game where my opponent deployed his hoplite units beyond
supporting distance of each other, so they would be uneasy, hence eligible to
counter. Now that makes sense- your unit commanders can only respond to the
battlefield situation if you deliberatly put them in stupid, dangerous, un
historical formations.
For all the work that has been expended on defining narrow parameters fro
what is a counter or a retirement, does anyone really think that this is an
improvement? This is, after all supposed to be something resembling a
simulation.

this has always been true. Don't get the issue.
