Subject: Re: Re: Why should I believe this is an improvement on 7th Edi... More complete rewrite? Holy cats. I don't suppose you might find the time to be a little more specific? Well, ok. You asked for it Smile. Here is a rewrite of 6.36 Recall moves. Note it is longer than whats in the rules. It contains a fair amount of repetition to avoid ambiguity.  If the formatting is bad because of mail clients, follow the section numbers carefully, thats crucial. In printed form where its layed out right, its a breeze to read and find stuff in. If indexed, arguments or questions can be quickly resolved. This section is for purposes of illustration only and contains some of my interps where there are gaps in the original. Please also note, I am not a professional writer and I probably have not done this very well. I refer you all to the rules for Empires in Arms by Avalon Hill for an excellent example of the genre. Having said that, here you go Dan Sichel 6.36 Recall Moves. Recall moves allow bodies in exposed positions to fall back. Recall moves are made as the first actions in Phase 9, The End Phase of the bound (3.2). 6.36.1 Who may or must make recall moves 6.36.1.1 Recall moves must be made by bodies replaced in hand-to-hand combat regardless of any other provisions of section 6.36. 6.36.1.2 Any unit composed entirely of Light Infantry (LI) that was at or within 40p of any steady close or loose order enemy body of foot at the end of the retirement move phase of the bound (4.0) will be required to make a recall move unless one or more of the following apply.          6.36.1.2.1 A LI unit required to make a recall move due to being at or within 40 paces of any steady or loose order enemy foot was behind the flanks of all units at the end of the retirement move phase of the bound (4.0) that would otherwise cause it to recall.          6.36.1.2.2 A LI unit required to make a recall move due to being at or within 40 paces of any steady or loose order enemy foot was at least partially in difficult terrain at the end of the retirement move phase of the bound (4.0).         6.36.1.2.3 A LI unit required to make a recall move due to being at or within 40 paces of any steady or loose order enemy foot voluntarily takes a waver test when required to make the recall move and passes. Units voluntarily taking a waver test and failing will be required to make a recall move and will become shaken.
6.36.1.2.4 A LI unit required to make a recall move due to being at or within 40 paces of any steady or loose order enemy foot has been charged. A unit otherwise required to make a recall move due to due to being at or within 40 paces of any steady or loose order enemy foot that is charged must evade the charge in phase 7b (Charge Response). 6.36.1.3 A unit that made a charge move this bound in Phase 7c that did not contact enemy troops may voluntarily make a recall move. 6.36.1.4 A unit that ceased pursuit unless the unit converted its pursuit into a charge may voluntarily make a recall move. 6.36.1.5 Recall moves are made first by the side that did not have iniative as determined in phase 6.13. All recall moves are made by this side and when completed, all recall moves are made for the side that did have iniative as determined in phase 6.13. 6.36.1.6 Required recall moves are moved first in the order the player desires. 6.36.1.7 Following all of a side's required recall moves, that side's voluntary recalls are made. Each voluntary recall move is completed as it is decided to be made. That is, a player may make voluntary recalls unit by unit, without having to decare all voluntary recalls before moving. 6.36.2.1 Recall moves are variable moves (6.11). The determination of distance moved is made as each unit moves. Units must move the entire variable amount determined. 6.36.2.2 Recall moves begin by turning each element in the unit 180 degrees. The unit then moves directly along a line perpendicular to the front edge of the unit. At the end of the movement each element again turns 180 degrees and ends facing the position it began the phase occupying. 6.36.2.2.1 There is no deduction of movement distance for the 180 degree turns at the beginning and end of the recall move. 6.36.2.3 Recall moves must conform to rules for passing gaps and interpenetrate friends (6.5) if met while fulfilling 6.36.2.1. Well, there are a couple of good things in here and I'll try and incorporate
them, but you also have some rules completely wrong. Not sure what the
problem is, but I'll look into it in more detail later. It is also way too
long for the rule covered. I don't know of anyone else having trouble with
recall - can I get some second opinions from other folks out there?

I'm an old board gamer and have played EIA many times. Of course you must
recognize that I used the exact same structure for Warrior. No need to
comment on this again, unless you just have to.

I DO very much appreciate the time you put into that suggested rule. Please,
don't take offense if there are parts I do not agree with or use. Tell him,
Don.

And your name is Dan Sichel? I want to add you to the playtester list for
the front of the rule book, but I see a differnt name on the email address -
just want to be sure.
Jon

Yup. I just keep firing, and Jon just keeps sifting. Some of my ideas are
good, some are bad. My technical writting skills are pretty good too. I
reword, twist, shape, and question all the time. Some of my stuff will NOT
get into the final copy do to: being wrong, being unpopular, being to
difficult to incorporate, accidentally changes the original game intent,
etc. I say fire away Dan, but be prepared to have some of your ideas fall
on the cutting room floor. Thick skins we must have as playtesters. BTW
where the heck do you live? At least one of my buds thought your original
post was from me. Thats how similarly we seem to write and think (about
rule wording at least - I do not know yet your views on LTS use under HOLD
orders while staring at a 2 element gap in a titty bar).

Don
