commander of this LI unit has full intention of moving the elephant unit
forward 120 paces during the mounted approach portion of his turn, bringing
the two bodies back within 120 paces of each other, and therefore within one
tactical move of each other.

No, it is not.

An Indian elephant body with a detachment of LI, LB is currently combined
and is considered a single unit. Two models of elephants are in front, with
the two elements of LI directly behind as noted below:
Enemy Body

shot over"
Question
Does this indicate that the LI could shoot from the second rank behind the
elephants when combined as a single unit? >>
Yes.

No. You can't voluntarily make such a move, no matter how legal it would be
if the LI weren't a detachment and no matter what 'might' happen in the
future.

Jon:
2.53 states that a detachment "must not voluntarily go or remain further
than its own tactical move from its parent unit. How does this apply to the
following situation?:
First Question:
Indian LI unit, currently detached from parent Elephant unit is 120 paces in
front of the Elephant unit. During foot approaches, the Indian LI is moved
forward 120 paces, now placing it 240 paces distant from the elephant. The
commander of this LI unit has full intention of moving the elephant unit
forward 120 paces during the mounted approach portion of his turn, bringing
the two bodies back within 120 paces of each other, and therefore within one
tactical move of each other.
Is this allowed?
Second Question
An Indian elephant body with a detachment of LI, LB is currently combined
and is considered a single unit. Two models of elephants are in front, with
the two elements of LI directly behind as noted below:
Enemy Body
ELEL
LILI
I realize that LI that are on a common base with elephants shoot as if a
second rank as stated in 8.7. However, 8.7 also states, "or behind a single
rank of other mounted troops of their own unit, shoot as if second rank
figures of an entirely LI body. Chariots and elephants cannot otherwise be
shot over"
Question
Does this indicate that the LI could shoot from the second rank behind the
elephants when combined as a single unit?
Thanks.

To continue this a little further. The LI detachment and the ELP
parent unit are deployrd separately. When they begin to march the LI
will march on 4s, the ELP will march on 3s. On march segment 4 the
LI marchs so that it is more than 120pacesfrom its parent unit! Is
this legal given that the owner has every intention of catching up
to the LI with the ELP,s in future march Segments?
Thank you John

My way of dealing with this is to start the LI detachmen in a column behind
and off to the side of the parent.
I have been able to keep the LI marching all 4 phases even when the parent
is close order foot.
In the end they are both stopped by enemy troops and are lined up 240 away,
so the results are ok.
However, this is one rule I think could be changed, that a detachment can
opt to march its first bound when the parent first marches.

Phil,
I'm finding that we agree too often! I would take this a step further
and say that units that march in a higher order that find themselves behind a
slower marching unit should be allowed to march at their first opportunity. As
the rule has been since 7th edition, it is very unflexible.
