Ok, those of you who know me know I am not the type to be looking over my
shoulder or worrying about the past. But I am very interested in fixing things
for the future. So, here’s the plan for how we will avoid some of the
glitches that occurred this past weekend and others like it.

1. The revised rulebook. The number one way to reduce confusion about the
rules is the best rulebook possible. I have eighteen sets of eyes looking at
this thing from all angles for the next three months. We are going to make the
rulebook we all wanted to make in the first place.

2. We here at FHE are going to implement a plan we are working on now to make
sure the four of us have as common and consistent an understanding of the rules
as possible.

3. I, with my rules author hat on, will be working out with Scott, with his
NASAMW umpire hat on, new ways to ensure consistency between rules intent and
umpire decision. The old way isn’t working – I understand that and I am on
it.

4. I will not be answering all questions posed on the yahoo group as quickly as
I have in the past. On more than one occasion, in order to get the asker an
answer as soon as possible – especially in the last hours before a major event
– I have rushed answers and caused confusion. I will be spending more time
not just answering the question, but also considering how another person, with a
different but related issue, may ‘hear’ and implement the answer.

Ok, here’s your part…

1. Be patient. You’re used to often getting answers to rules questions
within minutes of asking. This may not always be the case in the future. The
more complex the question, the more other things it touches and/or the more
component parts to your question may take a day or more to get the answer. This
goes the same with the updates to the clarifications. I have gathered several
issues that need to be placed in a clarification update. But until I can
carefully craft the language and consider the impacts on the new rulebook text,
I can’t turn it around into an official update. Again, be patient.

2. Be precise. I don’t deal with ‘references’ to problems, just the
problems themselves. If you have a question, the best way to get it answered
quickly and clearly is to note that it is a question in the subject line, NOT
have it be buried in the text of a mail mostly on another subject or with an old
subject line. Include a clear diagram if necessary. ASCII diagrams take longer
to answer than powerpoint/jpeg/pdf/gif diagrams. Having to answer ‘why’
something is really adds time. So does a rules ‘question’ that looks more
like a commentary – you have no idea how many rules questions I get that have
no question mark in them…lol

3. Be positive – or at least neutral. I have a thick skin, but I also only
have 24 hours in a day (most of which are, admittedly, available to me because I
don’t sleep…). My personally management method is to constantly rank all
the things I have to get done in priority order. A question like: “Jon,
you’re a dirty lying cheat who screws me at every opportunity, but hey,
here’s a question for ya/thing I want you to fix for me/issue that needs
solving now….” doesn’t always rise to the top of the task heap quickly.
It will get answered, but it may find things in front of it for a while. I have
a day job, a family, a lovely wife and indeed, other interests besides
Warrior…(horrors!). I will kill myself to get this all as right as I can, but
if you’re just here to bitch, you are defining your place in the pecking order
of Warrior tasks and it is not high….

4. Be proactive. This egroup is the way we communicate with you, the player.
Ignore it at your own risk. Updates are here, decisions are here,
clarifications are here, press releases are here. I am well aware that to have
a current and complete set of Warrior information this year you need a rulebook,
the clarifications, Warrior1214 and the errata for all the list books. I like
all that less than anyone here, but it is our current reality. You need to get
and read and have this stuff. I have guys with charts from other games, but
claim never to have heard that Warrior has a clarification document. That is
not on me, friends. If there is another way you guys would like us to
communicate this info to you (a 21st century way, that is…) then please offer
it up for consideration. You can also be proactive by sending me and/or Scott
any concerns you have about rules before they come up in a hotly contested game.
I am sorry you have to hear this, but the idea that you should not do this
because you are ‘giving something away’ just simply falls on deaf ears.
Sean Scott is a master at checking in with Scott and myself on things he is
planning to do or working out with his army and it saves SO much heartache all
around. I would prefer we all did that. If that had been done prior to Cold
Wars, every single thing I am aware of being an issue would have been solved
long before the doors opened on Thursday.

Thanks for your support.

Jon

Howdy,

I'm always happy to post things on the Warrior page
(http://www.nasamw.org/warrior_resource_page.htm) on the NASAMW site, but
don't have the time to read through all Warrior stuff in detail to find it.
Please do send me directly whatever stuff you feel should have wider
dissemination there.

We players should attempt to remember that this is, in the end, a human endeavor
and invariably mistakes will be made. At the same time, we should recognize
your commitment to make this the best rules set available. I , for one, have
every confidence that is the case.

We (players) should also recognize THIS IS A GAME.
