Just started to work my way through the rules and try to understand several
items...

note - they are much easier to follow than 7th (well done!)

two questions...

1. Flank attacks, is there an angle at the attacking unit must come in from
to count as a flank attack?
The rules do not say there is - so I assume the answer is no.
I would expect the outcome of this to see lots of flank attacks where the
defender cannot counter-charge to prevent the flank attack.
If unit A is directly opposite unit X and charges directly ahead the two
units line up precisely - if Unit B is slightly off to the side of Unit A -
lets say by 1/4 inch or so and charges so that the front corner of the
leading element contacts Unit X on the side face and would then pivot onto
the flank of Unit X.
Is this correct?
Also the section on flank attacks includes the phrase "complete element" -
could someone explain what this means?

In support shooting I inflict 7 cas on an 8 figure unit, then in combat I
inflict 9 cas, do I add the 7 and 9 to give 2 CPF or just 1 CPF?

Thanks - Gerard

<<1. Flank attacks, is there an angle at the attacking unit must come in from to
count as a flank attack?>>

In terms of degrees, no. In order to hit the flank of a body, the charging body
must make contact in such a manner that the entire front rank of the charging
body is behind the flank of the target body. If even part of the front edge of
one element of the front rank is not entirely behind the flank of the target,
the charger lines up against the target's front (or rear if charging from
'behind' the body).

<<I would expect the outcome of this to see lots of flank attacks>>

Actually it is harder than it appears, both due to what I just said and due to
the requirment that any wheel by the charger in a charge must be toward the
target (that is around the front corner of the charging body that is closest to
the target).

<<If unit A is directly opposite unit X and charges directly ahead the two units

by 1/4 inch or so and charges so that the front corner of the leading element

Is this correct?>>

Without a picture I can make no final determination, but that 'sounds' wrong as
if the two bodies where pointed in exactly opposite directions A would pass
right by X. And at only 1/4" apart laterally, any wheel by A would look to take
it into partial contact with X's front face.

<<Also the section on flank attacks includes the phrase "complete element" -
could someone explain what this means?>>

At least one element of the charger must end in contact with the target body's
flank, not just be past it.

<<In support shooting I inflict 7 cas on an 8 figure unit, then in combat I

You have done 0 CPF in support shooting, 1 CPF from hth, and 2 CPF from ss and
hth combined.

Jon,

thanks for the response - I think I start to see what you mean on the flank
charges...

Don't forget that the flank charger must be able to fully pivot and conform
in the space so that the chargers front edge is in complete parallel contact
with the target side edge.

A further question - does anyone in the defending (flanked) unit fight?
