Good, I'm glad to hear your going to be there. I'll make an effort as well.

Actually Kelly, I believe both are part of larger events, so one
would suppose people have very little say on the date.

Several of us down here are attending Fort Worth Wars. NEVER pass on
a chance to visit the DFW clubs, which is and always should be, the
single largest motivating factor in tournament selection. ;-)

Not sure about the event down here. I know I'm going.

Not at present. Perhaps we need to consider a less impacted date if we are
to try for an annual DFW event with a big draw. SA is trying to promote a
big regional event beginning this year too with their Oct 9 event, but it is
the weekend after BW and may run into the same issues we are having with
FWW. They will have perhaps a bit more success than we have as the weekend
after their event seems open so they are not sandwiched like we are. Its
just a busy time of year event wise.

Indeed.

I suggest the following - let's try and find a date for an alternating
'challenge' tourney for TX and KS/MO. One year we come to you, next year you
come
to us, etc. We play a tourney but X number of players from each locale are
also representing their locale as a 'team'. their combined scores in the
tourney are added to determine that year's champion. Prize could be a cup with
plaques that goes home with the winner until next year. Name could be
something like the 'Great Western Challenge Cup' etc.
This way we could stop trying to get each other to events that will never
make sense time-wise.
Bad times for us would be Feb, Mar (or Apr, depending on Cold Wars), May,
July, Sept/Oct.
Whatcha think?

Jon

How about early Jan? Maybe the weekend of MLK's birthday.

That's the weekend we did Winter Wars last year, so we know it is typically
open. I'd do that.

Will file this away. It seems like a slow part of the year and if we can
appeal to KC it has the potential of beong a 20 person event.

If you guys choose to run it this year that weekend, we'll come down. If we
run it, you'llhave to come to us the first time.

As a member of the KC group, I know I would participate in such a
tournament. As Jon suggested, it could travel back and forth between the
two cities. Now which one of us hosts the first one?

We have this large, very nice trophy called the San Antonio Cup, that
dates from the dawn of ancients past that used to be given away every
year to the top team at a big Texas tournament we used to have in
Austin ... back when we were the old S.W. Society of Ancients. It has
been won by teams from Michigan all the way to California with
several stops in between. I even think some guys from up KC way had
it for a year. It has little engraved brass plates to show all the
winners.

Right now, the current holders are the team of David Beeson, Jeff
Chladek (my Brother-in-Law that no longer plays, to the loss of us
all) and me. We have not offered this thing up in years (since we
joined NASAMW I think), but its a great trophy with TONS of tradition.

I will talk to David and Jeff, and see if perhaps this might fit in
with this plan.

Thanks ... g

I think we are onto something.

Three or four man teams could enter to have their points totaled, but overall an
individual (as opposed to team/doubles) event.

We could move it around - SA, DFW, KC, etc.

We could incorporate the ideas from the 15mm championship proposal Harlan gave
to the EC.

I really do think we could merge some of these ideas and resources and come up
with something special.

We would HAVE to have a non-playing umpire who was as disinterested as
possible....

Okay Don,

Jack called last night and told me he could only make the Border Wars trip.
So far it looks like Steve and I for sure and Mike is on the bubble but most
likely will attend. I wonder if anyone else from KC is thinking about coming?. .
. Charles?

I totally understand. We are not burdened by the event before FWW, but
several of us do intend to make BW (I can not because of a blasted work
interference that takes me out of 2! consecutive weekends). I'd hoped a
couple of the KC diehards might try, but as I stated, I do understand.
