formation, that provided lotsa protection for the standard grunt whereas

the whacko barbarians in front of them would be wailing away with some

long sword, geting tired in the process, AND opening himself up for some

convienient stab wound in the gut or something. >>

Absolutely, and my point. I was not aware that HTW gets 1.5 ranks in
continuing rounds, which largely solves the problem.
Except that, unless there is something else I'm missing, (ie regs vs
irregs ) it causes another problem. Do Franks, being HTW but 'standard grunt
whacko barbarians' get the same advantage in later rounds, because they threw
Franciscas as they charged?

>Correct. In a case such as this, it would be 1.5 ranks of whacko
barbarians vs 1.5 ranks of ruthless imperialistic Roman oppressers. The
main difference in this instance would come down to armor so there's 1
factor difference there and possibly fatigue since the assumption is
that the Franks would be tired before the Romans. So it's possible that
the Romans would get 1 bound with a +2 factor difference over the
Franks. The assumption in my mind is that should the Romans win, they
then let the Franks recoil without follow-up and charge in next time
with a factor 6 hitting.
