Gentlemen
I have learned today of an effort to move Ancients events now in the Lampeter
room at the Host to the Showroom for Historicon 2006. I would urge you in the
strongest terms possible to reconsider this action.
It is a slap in the face to a community of gamers who - as much as anyone - make
Historicon what it is.
After years of struggle with inadequate facilities, competitive Ancients has
settled into the only facility at the Host worthy of its activity level, draw,
potential for recruiting new players and economic impact. It is important that
this group be kept together due to the cross-system movement we have and would
like to increase. It is important that it be recognized for its place in HMGS
success. It is important that the requisite table space be well-lit and as
concentrated by game system as possible for ease of access by players to event
organizers and umpires.
It is also not coincidence that competitive Ancients has one of the largest
draws of players under 30 at the con and continues to grow. In the future -
rather than being broken up into smaller venues (we certainly would not fit
wholesale into the showroom...) - this branch of the hobby will actually need
*more* of the Lampeter area and not less.
Also, on behalf of our brothers in the Flames of War arena - the fastest growing
historical miniatures game on earth - what I have said above applies to them as
well and we are happy to share that space with them for the same reasons.
Please reconsider this decision - if made. It is not representative of an
understanding of the place held by and impact of this part of the con.
I have also heard the ugly rumor that the basis for this decision is a personal
dislike for competitive gaming on the part of some of the BOD members. For now,
I am going to refuse to believe that such a nonsensical attitude exists, let
alone would be acted upon capriciously. I do not know most of you and the one
of you I know best - Pete Panzeri - I know understands that competitive gaming
is as much a part of the vibrancy of our hobby as any other. Please make it
true that this isn't some silly personal agenda at work on the part of people we
elected for leadership and fair and intelligent decision making.
Thanks for listening. There's certainly plenty of time to fix this.
