Well done as always, Scott. I think I can speak for everyone on this;
We appreciated your hard and dedicated work. Thank you so much.
Mark Stone on his great job of "reffing" also. Thank you too.

I just wanted to mention Great job to Jake Kovel. I just noticed his strong
finish in the 25mm open. Just think of the havoc he could have wrought had he
been able to play in the NICT. :-)

Hey everyone, I wanted to send a special thanks to Kelly Wilkinson,
Jon Becker, and Mark Hissam for making my first ever Warrior tourney
a blast. I had no idea of what to expect, and frankly I was a little
nervous coming in. But they were all a lot of fun to play and I was
quickly put at ease. Also, bravo to Mark Stone for being readily
available for those wacky rule questions. And it was great meeting
the rest of you. I look forward to seeing and playing you in the
future. My brother and I have found our Mecca!

OK, time for a brief AAR. Those of you who have read previous versions
will be grateful for the brevity .
The theme can be summed up pretty easily: pick brush, surprise opponents,
win . I took a Seleucid with 3 units of LHI-fronted peltasts, a 4E unit
of IrrB Thracians, and 4 units of EC/HC lancers, plus less LI than I think
I have ever run in an army. Minimum pike - which spent the *entire
tournament* doing manouvres in my backfield, never once doing *anything* -
and 3 units of 2 El. [The single elephants rule I didn;t see in use; I
was tempted, but worried about the CPF from even modest javelin fire or
similar]. Each game I picked 3 pieces of brush and a hill.
I faced - no surprise, although a little disappointing - three other pike
armies. Steve Hollowell's Alex Imp was first, and the only opponent not
to place terrain, leaving two large brushes as parallel strips between the
two long table edges in table centre. He had a large allied Indian
command on my far left, which I essentially ignored, and the usual stuff
on the middle/right, plus two flank marched units of LC (one each flank).
The picket LC got munched pretty early, and a unit of companions on the
end of Steve's line at the right side of the brush forgot that while they
can always counter, they are still disordered by elephants and hence only
run away 40p... not enough. So that kinda caved in the flank as we we're
goming to a fight in the brush between his two hypaspist units and my
massed loosed foot, and the combination of flank charges and wavers rolled
it up. I got slopppy and allowed his Indian MC to get a flank charge on
my left-hand peltast unit as I turned to face the Indians, which broke
them and gave Steve a bunch of points. At the same time, though, his main
commend went on retreat, leaving a large pike-block shaped hole in the
middle of his Indian line which I exploited to send the Indians into
retreat also. Steve had sent a unit of 3 El on a flank march... they
arrived to find themselves on retreat orders .
Game 2 I faced Scott Holder with AES, and he placed four woods to go with
my terrain. It all got placed, much of it 'anywhere' to give a table
looking like something out of a rainforest. We came to grips pretty
quickly, though: on my far right, a chariot burst through a big pike block
to disorder it and allow a follow-up elephant charge, but the pike passed
al their wavers. A unit of my LC did an on-table flank march, also on the
right, but eventually got caught and dies behind enemy lines; they did tie
up Scott's ability to redeploy, though, so that I could try to force
something in the middle; this included sending elephants into the brush
after enemy LC . Most amusing, I shot one of Scott's elephant units to
a disordered halt, hit them with impetuous Thracians out of the brush -
and rolled -4 to not even do 1 cpf, and bounce off to try again next turn
. While all that was going on, though, my superior rough forces had
again won the battle in the middle and were forcing flanks which
eventually won the day.
Game 3 and Steve Rawls, who I was glad to see got the Sportsmanship award;
I was one of the folks to nominate him. He was very clearly *not*
expecting terrain; he picked a couple of woods and a major water feature,
and found his deployment area essentially surrounded by brush. I had
noticed that as well as a lot of pike, he had 2 (!) 48-man IrrD Arab MI B
blocks, so brush hurt him more than most enemies. Indeed, the two bow
blocks were a long line from the table edge on my right in, and did not
move much (although passing 4 counters!) as a combined arms force of
scythed chariot, skirmishing peltasts, and elephants beat the table-edge
one up and shook the second. Terrain really won this one - Steve's army
was pretty pinned, allowing my to pick matchups, and his force of
Thracians and Thorakitoi in a wood on my far left found themselves facing
massed lancers waiting for them to emerge while my own Arab MI B block got
to shoot up the one enemy El unit.
The NICT was a different story, and I typed enough for one screed...
