Italian Condotta Fast Warrior List (215) has the following listed as
the last unit:
Pavisiers 4E Reg C LHI CB or HG
Are they supposed to have Pavises?
The rules (7.2) say they can't have Pavises if they are LHI, LMI, or
LI, so it would seem their entry is correct.
But if they don't have Pavises and are in fact LHI, then they are
the same as normal Crossbowmen listed just above them in the list.
Is this perhaps for Fast Warrior purposes only, but they would be HI
upgradeable and capable of taking Pavises in the full list?

Pavisiers was the actual name for these guys. And yes, if they carry a pavise
they'd be close order. However, not all CB-armed dudes in the Condotta era were
noted carrying pavises, to include guys called "pavisiers", it's sorta a generic
phrase not unlike ribauds, etc. When creating the FW list, we made them loose
order because they play better that way. If they were armed with Pa, I woulda
made em close order. The Warrior Condotta list will most likely have some
flexibility in that regard.

Scott,
Thanks for the quick response.
Now, does anyone know who makes the best Italian Condotta figs? I am looking
at Essex, LKM, and Mirliton. Are there any others I should consider?

Campbell,
You are on track with Mirliton. They make the best Condotta figures
barr none. Museum makes some fine late Medievals as well. They run
larger than the Mirliton's if I am not mistaken.
Have you been to the following site?:
http://www.umiacs.umd.edu/~kuijt/miscellania/figreview.html
The best review on 15mm I have seen so far. It is not complete in
reviewing entire figure lines but it will give you an idea of figure
quality. Keep in mind that this period also extends into the
Renaissance and you can use earlier figures from this period as well.
You may want to look at these type of figures in the brands you
mention. You may see figures listed as "Italian Wars". Be careful as
some figures definitely do not overlap!
Rumor has it that this list will be a more viable tournament army as
well. Glad to see that the FHE are making some of my favorite armies
more playable! )
Hope this helps,
Chris Tebo
PS: Greg Regets has been looking at figures for this period for his
KOSJ army and may be of some help as well.

Mr. Tebo,
That site was very helpful! I took the plunge and sent off an order to
Mirliton! Hopefully I will have all the figs needed for the Fast Warrior
list by next week and can start messing with them soon after :-)
Will be a while before I am ready to jump into the Tournament scene. I have
maybe 5 games under my belt, and all have been losses...but I am getting
better! I at least know why I lose now...

On Chris' behalf - he's a hero.
He jumped into Warrior by being a member of my Warrior campaign playtest - which
means he had to learn Warrior, Fantasy Warrior and Campaign Warrior on short
notice - not something for the weak at heart. Oh, and the last two are drafts I
change as often as once a week....
And now he's planning his fist historical army with Italian Condotta. Makes me
get all misty-eyed thinking about it...
He and the other recruits who are part of this nine-player campaign are making
this playtest happen, often at great expense to their egos and with lots of
tylenol involved. I cannot thank them enough.

Chris,
Glad to hear you made the plunge. Also glad to hear that you are
pursuing Warrior further even with losses. There are very, very few of
us who have not lost our share of games in learning! Those of us that
haven't lost much either rolled up or played the rules wrong :-O ha
ha Anyway, glad to hear that you are enjoying things. You know, the
players that keep playing and learn are the ones that will stomp us
all in the near future.
Let's hear how you like the figures. Also, if possible, why not scan
some of them unpainted and upload to the file section? I have seen
these painted and very few unpainted. I tried to visit the factory in
2000 but my Italian uncle confused the address. It seems as there are
a couple of towns named very similarly. I did get their catalog
through his help later though. Really, really wonderful figures. I
hope they do Imperial Romans (all flavors) as I think they would be
just great.
Good luck with your Italian Condotta. See if you can't get a draft of
the upcoming list so you can flesh it out to a full 1600 point army.
This army is quite possibly the most colorful one out there. And if
my suspicions are correct, it will be a good one to compete with.
