So, Friday I spent 8 1/2 hours on a plane trying to get from Phili back to San
Francisco. Once I'd drained the battery on my laptop playing "Age of
Conquerors", watched "Friday Night Lights" (quite a good movie), and finished
the crossword puzzle, I still had several hours to kill. Thank goodness I had
my copy of Oriental Warrior with me. I whipped up a few army lists that I have
no intention of playing, but proved an interesting exercise in the quality of
OW lists.

I'm speaking purely from a tournament gamer's point of view here, but let me say
this: the quality and playability of these lists all the way through is
impressive, and superior to any of the other books. Here's a 1600 variant of a
list I'm sure most of us will routinely speed past looking for something more
"interesting". In fact, it turns out to be quite a tough little army:

We have yet to discover cavalry. We don't really understand this whole "armor"
concept, and we think bronze is an advanced technology; we've never heard of
iron. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it's... (drum roll)... OW list 2, Northern
Barbarians!

CinC w/6 stands Irr B LMI 2HCW/1HCW,JLS,Sh
Sub w/6 stands Irr B LMI 2HCW/1HCW,JLS,Sh
3 x 8 stands Irr A/D LMI JLS,Sh
4 x 2 stands Irr A LMI 2HCW/1HCW,JLS,Sh
2 x 6 stands Irr C LI B,Sh/B
1 x 6 stands Irr E LMI JLS,Sh/JLS
1 x 6 stands Irr E LMI IPW
Ally w/2 stands Irr B 4HCh, 1 w/B 1 w/LTS
(detachment) 2 stands Irr B LMI JLS
3 x 2 stands Irr B 4HCh, 1 w/B 1 w/LTS
(for one of the above: detachment) 2 stands Irr B LMI JLS
1 x 4 stands Reg C MI LTS,Sh/LTS
1 x 4 stands Reg C LI B
1 x 2 stands Reg C LI B

20 units, 9 scouting points, 272 figures, 1595 points

The Irr E troops are not a total liability (and yes, they're required if you buy
the rest of the list this way). Stick a woods on one flank, force march the IPW
guys to the front of the woods, and put the JLS guys a little ways behind them.
For 77 points you've now created a woods it will take your opponent the entire
game to clear out; that's one flank anchored.

This is one of the few lists on which you can get troops double-armed with 1HCW
and JLS. Do the math on what happens to enemy infantry hit impetuously by a
front rank of 2HCW,JLS,Sh and a back rank of 1HCW,JLS,Sh. Now do the math if
you roll up 1 with a such a unit of Irr A.

Oh, and the chariots backed by LMI detachments (which do get to fight from
behind) will do a ton of damage to infantry and generally take very little
damage in return. If you end up fighting against a cavalry opponent, don't
worry about hiding in rough terrain. You have 8 chariots that will either win
against cav, or lose by a small enough margin to enable you to swarm with your
superior numbers in subsequent bounds.

Reminds me of something Chris Damour would play. It's also worth noting that
this list would be a nightmare opponent for the Khmer list that Derek played in
last year's NICT.

Indeed. At the last Asian theme tourney I played "Northern Foot
Barbarians". I think that was the only game that Holder won with his Song
Dynasty Chinese...

Chris,

I remember your list of hoards of foot. Not that I had any flashbacks to when
you used those steroid-enhanced, Jose Canseco looking barbarians as Vikings and
they chased my Aztecs all over the place :-)

Just to stand up for my poor Khmer. They could give this army a good
fight. Smile
