I have always been fascianted by the ';wheels of time' that appear
within local groups - one player raises sassanid persian to defeat
the dreaded late imperial roman, then is in turn defeated by the
plethora of LTS/P armies, which are then in turn slaughtered by the
romans.
I love the fact the WRG (oops Warrior) has the circle of doom rules
where there is no one ultimate weapon (as opposed to defence).
I loved turning up at tournaments with a carthaginian army that had
one unit of spanish, no gauls, 2 elephants and heaps of Light units,
and masses of cheap MC/HC Jls no shield.
Opponents would sneer then later on weep as i used the skirmishers to
work the comabt units into position.
Of course I would then in turn get slaughtered but did enjoy
upsetting the local 'status quo'.
having run many tyournamnts that emphaisised histpricla lists we
tended to gravitate away from such 'cycles of doom' and began to run
historical lists which was a pleasure. Interestingly the players
witht he 'doom/invinvible lists' began to rethink their ususal
domination lists and began to think historically.
To me the art of wargaming is not so much competition as exploration
of the art of gaming in general with a known and loved well
researched (rather than well calcualted) historical list.
Regards
John
