I asked this question of Scott back when Feudal Warrior came out, but I can't
find his reply, so I'm asking again. My understanding is the Italian Condotta
list is really in effect 9 different army lists compressed as one: (1)
Milanese, (2) Florentine, (3) Pisan/Paduan, (4) Papal, (5) Neapolitan, (6)
Venetians in Italy, (7) Venetians in Greece, ( Genoese in Cyprus, (9) Other
city states not already mentioned.
My further understanding -- and this is where the question comes in -- is that
notations like this:
"Free Company Gascon Men-At-Arms Irr B EHK L,Sh @45 pts [F, Pa, Pi].... **2-9"
is just a short-hand way of saying:
"Florence:
Free Company Gascon Men-At-Arms Irr B EHK L,Sh @45 pts [F, Pa, Pi].... **2-9
Papal:
Free Company Gascon Men-At-Arms Irr B EHK L,Sh @45 pts [F, Pa, Pi].... **2-9
Pisan/Paduan:
Free Company Gascon Men-At-Arms Irr B EHK L,Sh @45 pts [F, Pa, Pi].... **2-9"
This matters for two reasons. Suppose, for example, that you take a Papal army
with a Florentine ally general (something that occurred historically with some
regularity). Then _if_ the papal troops take any Free Company, they must take
at least 2 stands of the aforementioned Gascon men-at-arms. If the Florentine
ally also takes Free Company troops, the presence of the Papal Free Company
does not exempt the Florentines from the requirement to meet list minima. The
only exception to this is in the notes, where it says "If an Ally-general is
present he brings the respective marked items for that city-state although
minimums are halved."
Question 1: "minimums halved" then means from 4 to 3 (2 Papal and 1 Florentine),
not from 2 to 1 (minimum of 2 between Papal and Florentine halved to 1 between
Papal and Florentine), right?
If I've got that right, then the same logic would have to apply to maxima, yes?
Since these are not halved, the Papal troops could bring up to 9 stands of
Gascon Men-at-Arms (though I'm not sure why you'd want to) _and_ the
Florentines could bring up to 9 stands of Gascon men-at-arms.
Question 2: So maximums apply separately to each city-state, right?

I have been playing this list since May and I am pretty sure that you have to
take the Free Company Allied general to get any Free Company troops (don't have
list with me). I will be very interested to hear what Scott has to say, this
could really open up some possibilities in this army.

Good catch, Steve. Looking at the list again, you're right. To get the Free
Company guys you have to have a Free Company ally general. It is unclear,
however, whether there is only one Free Company that roams all of Italy that
fought variously for Florence, the Papacy, and Pisa (that sounds an awful lot
like Sir John Hawkwood's White Company), or whether there are multiple Free
Companies in the service of the various city states.
A better example might be, say, the Hungarian Mercenaries of the middle period
(Irr C LC B). They show up on the Florentine, Neapolitan, and Papal list.
Almost certainly this is _not_ the same band of mercenaries fighting under
three different city states, but rather three different city states that called
on various Hungarian mercenaries. That would seem to indicate that, say, a Papal
CinC could get 0-6 Hungarians, as could a Florentine ally. That's one of the
points I'm trying to get clarified, anyway.
