I like Eco even though he is very heavy reading. What's the plot to this one?

I just started, so this is mostly based on the cover, but the title
character starts off as an Italian youth who meets Barbarossa alone and
lost in the woods. He ends up going with the german, who sends him off
to some school. The book jumps around a lot, so the next scene is
Baudolino during the sack of Constantinople some 45 years later. He
then begins to tell the events of his life.
I liked The Name of the Rose, but found Foucault's Pendulum about twice
as long as necessary (at least).

_The Island of the Day Before_ is brilliant. Psychotic(?) mariner
shipwrecked on the international date line...
