Okay, who makes it, how much does it cost, where can we
order it?
There has been considerable discussion of army lists for the
various powers over the years.
What my old club up around DC decided to do was to adapt
from similar Historical lists.
Easterlings --- played as Huns, Mongols, Tartars, Scythians,
etc. However, the "Wainriders" got Hussite war wagons too.
Southrons & Haradrim --- actually, we found armies drawn
from the Indian sub continent seemed to represent these
best, due to the inclusion of war elephant combat teams
(instead of the Hellenistic lines of war elephants). I
liked to use a version of the Moslem Ghazi armies.
Gondor -- various Late Middle Ages armies. Some folks
preferred the Teutonic Knights (the old Minifigs 15's were
easy to modify). Some folks preferred the Burgundian
Ordinance. However, if folks were working with a more
"ancient" collection, the Gondorian force inevitably was
played as a Roman.
Rohan -- varied, from a horse heavy Frankish army to a 12th
Century generic Frank/ crusader force. Again, when dealing
with more "classic" armies, folks liked the Goths.
Dunlendings --- Saxons, Guals, etc. etc.
High Elves --- we tended to use English Hundred Years War or
Wars of the Roses for this. If Classical, we'd use the
Greek / Macedonian figures, but up the percentage of Missile
and Heavy Cavalry.
The lesser Elves would need tribal specific lists, except
for upper Mirkwood, to which we tended to give a Late Roman
Army (obvious skills with bow in the culture, but the army
is specifically described as spear heavy)
We actually liked Viking lists for the Dwarves and Orcs.
Tribal variations are needed in both, of course, and one
player insisted on taking Saruman's forces as crypto-Roman.
It gave us all good excuses to enjoy our toy soldiers and to
engage in a lot of good natured ribbing. I'm still known as
"the Troll King" to some folks (and I only played them once
too- darn it!).
As you can see, they are quite flexible, and the agreement
among the other players to accept a list was important
(once, I made the blunder of accepting somebody's "kobold"
army as Imperial Roman -- my only excuse is that he was good
buddy and was willing to share his beer).
Enjoy.
