I don't really think anyone was meaning to pressure Jon on this. I know I
wasn't, and on his schedule is fine by me.
I belong to quite a few message boards, mostly about coaching football. If
there is one thing I have learned about this board, is that it contains very
sensitive people. As a general rule, if anything can be taken wrong, you can
rest assured it will. ;-)
Perhaps that is just the nature of our
hobby.

Well, speaking for myself...and hoping Jon doesn't mind to much
I play alot of FtF Games with Jon. I originally started playing Napoeloen's
Battles with him. My wife said "Get a Hoby, as long as it's not Golf" and I
used to play Napoleonics back in high school, so I thought, "No prob. I'll get
back into Napoleonics and it's all good." So I joined the NB group on yahoo,
found a post of Jon's and asked to join. Talk about open arms....
That was a about a year ago, and it's a running inside joke that I joined just
to play Naps Battles with Jon because thats all the spare time I had, and am now
doing:
Warrior, playtesting Fantasy Warrior and Campaign Warrior, the spreadhseet and
playtesting for SwordClash, and beginning to bump around ideas for Fleet
Warrior, which is along ways off! In additon, I am also "playtesting" Bright
Sword, which is the RPG affiliated with Warrior (and soon Sword Clash), in
addition to Flames of War (A Great WW2 Game), the occasional Battle Fleet
Gothic, and the occasional board game. I'm trying to get Jon into Empires in
Arms, but he's not going for it...for a guy who says he'll sleep when he's dead,
I am surprised at that 8-)
Playing FtF with him is a humbling expierence for a warrior novice like me, I
jumped into Warrior feet first and sank like a brick. What helps me is the
stories Jon tells about playing Warrior for Two years (?) before actaully
winning a game. Whats equally enjoyable is watching Jon play a game of Sword
Clash with his youngest daughter, who not only beats him from time to time but
also gets the jump on him rules wise, pointing out when he has to take waver
tests and the like...you want to talk about proud you should see him when he
describes that...hehe.
Anyways, I think everyone on the board has to admit, Jon and the rest of the
guys do a GREAT job of answering questions and addressing concerns. I think its
a testement to that customer service that after just a day of no response from
Jon, people are not neccessarily concerned that he hasn't responded yet, but
surprised.
Truly though, If you guys think he's fast here, you should see him in person,
when he's playing me on one table, gets up and goes to another table to answer a
Warrior Rules question there, goes to a third table and answers a Flames of War
question, watches me finish my moves, rolls the dice, causes a couple of waver
checks, and starts the process again all the while scanning his cell phone for
the Ebay auctions he has going. Truly a sight to behold...the epitome of
multitasking in action.
He'll be back soon. I'm sure he'll have the answer tonight...tommrrow Am at the
latest.

May it some day be said of us all, that we inspired such a post. Thanks,
Todd ... the man's humanity as well as competence is evident in your remarks.

Todd--
Jon thrashed me at the table for two + years ( I mean beaten like a
drum).
One of the more pleasurable moments in my long gaming career was
when I finally beat him.
He has since returned the favor (several times, he will add).
Keep it up. It will come around.

>And lest anyone forget, when *Captain* Cleaves first popped up in the Holder
basement back in the late 80s, early 90s, he was routinely thwapped by a wide
ranging group of players. Playing Warrior at 1200+ point levels brings all the
complexity the game has into play and it's *hard* to keep all that straight at
first. Fast Warrior is a great equalizer in that regard. I wish we had
something like it back then.

>I know of no one who hasn't gone thru this. It's neat seing somebody like Bob
Hess who predates me, come back, kinda into the fold. I learned under 5th
edition and was this impudent 15 year old playing godawful Camillian Romans and,
understandably, getting beat up nonstop for all of high school. Thank goodness
6th edition wasn't all that different since I took a 6 year break from the hobby
while in college. 7th, for some reason, didn't freak me as much as some players
(Bob's previous email comments for example) and I probably adapted better to
that game than the prior two iterations. Bottom line, the game is complex,
subtlety complex at that. When I first introduced Scott McDonald to it back in
the late 80s, he read the rules, shrugged his shoulders and said "what's the big
deal? Squad Leader's got more than this." Until he played his first half dozen
games. Then he was amazed at the almost contant variability on the table, the
complex problems posed to the gamer, and the occasaional "my whole game comes
down to this one counter roll" situations that haunt us all.
I bring this up for two philisophical reasons. The first is that most Warrior
players who pick up the game cold *do* have a steep learning curve, that, for
good or for bad, is the nature of the beast. One reason Fast Warrior was
developed was to lessen the impact of this, both in self esteem (it *is* hard
getting thwomped nonstop for two years before something clicks in your brain and
suddenly you can win some games) and in initial outlay. The second reason is
that practice makes perfect. This game requires steady regular play to some
extent in order to remain cognizant of all those things going on during a game.
I think that's why I'm so terribly rusty anymore since I just don't play the
game enough. Therefore, I tend to rely on Irr A trash to bail me out of
situations any practiced player would have seen to avoid. Then if I roll down
consistently, I have an excuse for losing:) :)
