 |

Hi. I only recently got the rules, so forgive my new and potentially
dumb questions. I have just started playing any kind of ancients
wargame, but I have been building a force for Vis Bellica. Now, I
would also like to use these minis for Warrior, but the basing system
is different.
So, what effect will it have on the Warrior game, if I use 15mm
troops on 60mmx40mm bases in groups of 9, instead of the prefered
format?
Thanks in advance,
Iain

It is totally okay to use non-Warrior basing if you and your opponent are both
clear on what troop type the nonstandard bases represent and no 'gamey'
advantage is derived from it.
The issues are these:
1. The basing you mention is radically different than Warrior (which is also
the same basing system as every major ancients game out there - which makes me
wonder whay anyone would go 60x40 in 15mm with 9 figs across). You'll have to
do a lot of mental 'fixing' to make it come out right. In Warrior, number of
figures across a given front matters, and units come in groups of 40mm
frontages, not 60 in 15mm.
2. You can use any basing you like if your opponent has the same basing. But
the three of the four most popular rules sets all use the same system (Warrior,
DB(X), AW/MW) and none of the four use the one you describe. This means,
outside of the group of players you are in, you are unlikely to find a
compatible opponent.
3. At your house, you may use Warrior in any way you like and with any basing
you like. Public events, having people from all over the world attend, use the
standard basing system. Yours would require a great deal of 'jury-rigging' to
make work as your bases would be longer, but with less figures per frontage and
the idea of 'try to imagine its only 40mm across' would probably make most event
organizers say no.
Sorry I can't be more help. Something divisible by 40mm (using 15mm figs) would
be much easier to work with.

Is that 40mm across by 60mm deep with 3 figs wide by 3 figs deep? If so,
that would make things much easier.

Absolutely! As long as you and your opponent both agree on what each base
represents in the game - you're all set.

Thanks for all of the info. The trouble is that I am very new, and I
dont know what kind of advantages and disadvantages there are when
using a different base size. The rule book implies that a frontage of
30mm is fine and any depth is OK as well. However, this alone
suggests that any larger frontage on a base would affect the
game/balance. The Vis Bellica bases are 60mm (frontage) x 30mm (not
60x40 as I previously stated) so this would mean that my VB troops
would all be looking over their right shoulder and crab walking
across the battlefield!
Unfortunately, VB uses 60mm x 30mm with two ranks of five and four. I
have tried cutting this up to be fielded in smaller units that could
be combined for both games, but it wont work. I guess that I will
need to collect two aries, one for each game! ([Damn, more toys. ]
I must admit that I am not too worried about games outside my
comfortable games room. I am not a tournament player and like to have
relaxing games with plenty of discussion and music.
If I just 'pretend' that a 60mm x 30mm base with 9 guys is actually a
40mm x 15mm base with four, and leave everything else unchanged, would
this work at all?
Thanks for all of your advice,
Iain
