Jerry

I agree with you that the cohorts of the Roman army in some time periods are
best represented as two-element units. Between the current 'gap' rule (6.53)
concerning charges and the intended list rule for certain Roman lists (a
preview of which can be seen in those roman lists in Fast Warrior) it is my
intent to make Warrior the ancients game that best simulates roman manipular
tactics. Double or triple lines of two-element legionnaire units WILL work
in this game if there is any way I can make it happen. This is one of the
reasons Imperial Warrior is out there in the future.

Until then you can help us by playing your romans this way and using the list
rule from Fast Warrior and letting us know your experiences.

Jon

Hail Caesar!

I think there could be a case made for having "units" larger than one cohort.
Since the Roman army fought in lines of multiple cohorts, it wouldn't be out
of line to have a three or four cohort front line unit that only has one
command point.

The cohorts in the second and/or third lines could then be in smaller "units"
allowing them to move up as needed or attend to the flanks.

I'm also curious how big an army you want to make. Two legions of Reg C HI
HTW,Sh cost something like 960 points without command points don't they?
(Isn't HI 6 points.) You add in a couple generals, some cavalry and LI and
all the command points and you are getting up there pretty quick.

To FHE ... Congrats on your mail order service. My rules flew down
here to Canberra, Australia, in next to no time and I have been
poring over them ever since. I've run a few FW games with the army
I borrowed nearly 18 months ago to play in my first con (thanks
Dave)... Late Imperial Romans ... a 1500 pt army has enough elements
to field FW Late Imp Romans against Huns, which is a lot of fun.

One day I will have the time and money to have my own army, and when
I do, I want it to be Caesar's. but I have a problem with the 7th
lists. Specifically, I want to organise my legions into Cohorts and
I feel those should have just two elements of HI. This fits in with
the 'typical unit' description in the back of the old 7th rule book,
and it fits with the impression I've gained from every book I've
read on Caesar's army plus the GMT board games plus Ancient Empires
(I own lots of games and rules !). Caesar's legions had 10 Cohorts
with some 500 men in them. But when I look at the 7th lists, I see
there are only some 20-odd regular command points, so I could only
have two legions with 20 cohorts .. but the list has enough
legionaries in it to fill many more legions than this. I am
confused. Do the list designers intend me to have fewer cohorts but
larger ones ??

When I've raised this with the few 7th opponents I've met (about a
dozen at two Cancons and one true die-hard 7th player in Canberra)
I've only met one who is sympathetic with two-element cohorts.
Everyone else says something like 'You'd be mad to organise HI that
way, you're much better off with four or six elements cos they'll
fight much better'.

But I don't want to design an army around maximising H-T-H factors.
I want 10 cohort legions. If they were good enough for Caesar ...
well, you know what I mean.

Also, on the list theme, how many points are they usually designed
for ? IE, are they meant for something like 2,000 so if you want a
bigger army you take multiples of what's in the list ???

I would really appreciate some advice from any of the FHE gurus on
these questions .. and any opinions from experienced ex-7th players
out there would be welcome.

Very good point here about organization. One could make a point for detachments.
First line cohort being the parent unit with a detachment unit in the second
line
and even third line. (Yes, two detachment for a single parent) OR the opposite
order with parent in the rear and detachments in front.
