I thought this would be a sensible place to ask for
recommendations of figure painting services; I'm probably looking
to get both a 15 and 25mm army painted for H'con. Any positive
experiences?

Ewan
Danny Weitz strongly recommends Ski Lanke. I have not used them.

Ewan;
You may be hard pressed to get a good to excellent painter to do
figures with that short turn-around time. The ones I have used in
the past are:
Dave Woodward of EVM-Excellent painter. A little pricey, and
turnaround is rather lengthy. Based in Nottingham. Paints like
many Brits that use the Dallimore style.
Fernando of Sri Lanka-Cheap prices (except postage). Medium to good
results. This might be your best shot in getting something before H-
Con. Be sure and send them copious notes with uniform/equipment
research, or you will get turquoise armor (happened to me with some
early Germans).
El Mercenario (Javier Gomez) from Madrid. Excellent stuff. You can
see their work on the Corvus Belli website. Very pricey since the
dollar has dropped like a rock vs. the Euro. Excellent turnaround
time. Might be worth a shot.
You might also check The Miniatures Page and post a 'Help Wanted' on
the Painting Discussion Board. You could get several responses back
from painters willing to take on a commission.
Good luck.

As a former lead slave painter, I would not even consider a job in
25mm at 1600 points in that time frame. For straight wargame quality
you are looking at around 4 months with unbased/flocked figs. This
comes out to around 6 figures a night completed to a quality of 6-7.
However, I am slower than some sweat shops in the third world to be
sure ;)
I looked at the sri Lanka guys pages. You are talking around $130
per unit of infantry and around $30-$50 for each cavalry unit. Speed
cost money. For 20 units this is something like $1500 dollars
averaging 1/2 infantry 1/2 cavalry. Ouch!
Do you already have the lead? If not then you may be cheaper to buy
units from ebay.

Yeah, I realised it might be too short.
No lead yet - have been checking eBay (and various other places)
but nothing coming up.
This is why I have only one army, and in 15mm! :)

Ewan, I don't know if it can be done in the required timeframe but I have had a
lot of WFB figures done by this service (which I am very happy with) and I
believe they would do a good job on historicals also. Here is the link,

If you like, here is a link to the Deep-Strike Web site. They run a workshop out
of the Wargaming club house where I am a member. I have used their services
myself for some of my Han Chinese and found them friendly, very efficient, and
they will offer you a fair price. Can they get an army done for Historicon? Most
likely yes, depending on the complexity, If you tell them what you want they
will let you know if it is do-able. Hope this helps.

Yes, I can get an army done for Historicon but I would need to get it
started quickly, and it depends on how you wanted to painted. If you want
an army painted like my hoplites then likely not. If you want something
with the basic paint job, even a 300 figure infantry army, it could be done.
The basic price is $3US for an infantry figure, and $6US for a cavalry
figure. I can give a more exact price when I have more details as to what
you want painted and how you want it painted.
Note that we can also order figures for you.
For some sample pictures and some different levels of painting, go to
http://www.deep-strike.com/Product/gallery/ancients/trojanwar.htm. These
are all from the Achean Greek army that I painted figures for for Christian
Cameron that was pictured in the current HMGS East newsletter (so somebody
must have appreciated it...).

I just want to thank Allan, as well as all the other folks -
Richard, Doyd, Eric, David, Michael - who gave me responses.
The Deep-Strike gallery shows some awesome painting, even at
'basic' level, and Michael tells me that getting an army done for
H'Con should be fine. So that's where I'm going.
Thanks again, all!
