After 20 years, I have decided to make a foray into putting together a
25mm army or two. This raises a few questions:
1. Isn't there someone out there who manufactures and sells steel spears
of various lengths with leafhead tips? I have always insisted on replacing
the lead *wire ropes* that come cast with too many figures. If so, whom? I
bought some 15mm Xyston spears at HCon, and liked them a great deal. This
is what I'm talking about in 25mm.
2. How about basing? In 15mm I've always used high grade cardstock
(artboard matting paper), but fear this will not hold up well with larger
and heavier figures. Suggestions?
Thanks.

I use a heavy matt board for both 15mm and 25mm. The stuff I get works fine for
both.

Both Old Glory and Foundry make premade spears. The old glory kind come in
different lengths and have premolded leaf-shaped spearheads.
Litko Aerosystems is my new choice for bases. Laser cut wood with magnetic
bottoms.

Precut bases? Oh yeah, now that's what I'm talking about! Thanks

Old Glory are steel with leaf-shaped pewter spear points.

Do the Old Glory spears have steel shafts? (Their website has no pics).
Foundry's steel spears are apparently sharpened, but not flattened and
shaped. What I'm looking for are steel shafted spears suitable for 25mm
use that also have leaf-shaped spearheads. I like the Xyston variety for
15mm. Thanks.

Olympian Games have excellent brass spears in 40mm, 60mm and 100mm
lengths which are flattened and shaped. See their website at

Probably more work than you wanted to do, but I have taken the brass wire
and tapped it a couple times with a hammer, then shaped them with the
grinding wheel (on a dremmel).once you get going, it takes no time at all to
make up enough for my use.or I just save myself the hassle and buy them
(smile).

This is what I have been doing in 15mm the last ten years. I think the
imperfections in my technique will be magnified by the larger scale, so I
plan to buy from OG.
On another subject, how do people feel about white vs. black priming in
25mm, and what about "dipping"?

Greek,
I personally use the black priming in both 15's and 25's. It makes my painting
faster - I don't paint what I want "outlined" and it works well for me. Also,
if you forget to paint something than at least it isn't as noticeable.

Yes, Todd, this has always been my preferred method as well, for the same
reasons, but in 15mm. Glad to hear it works for you in 25mm as well. I do
go a bit further by painting everything white or flesh that does not
remain black or get dry-brushed metallic. This provides a good base for
flesh washing, or for painting and shading clothing. I will see how this
works on the 25's once I get my spears from Old Glory. Good to hear from
you.

Greek,
I've found that the spears from old glory look very nice, and being steel hold
up remarkably well, but... I've had to drill out each and every spear head w/ a
dremel to ensure that the spear will crazyglue well to the spear-shaft. Big
pain in the butt, but worth it in the end.

Drat! I was assuming that OG already had countersunk the spearheads so
that part would be moot, or else that the shaft and head would already
come together in one piece. They're not? Oh well, at least it'll be easier
than the few times I've done similar countersink spear jobs in 15mm!
