I have just started to research the carthaginian army, and as a side benifit
I've got a lot on the pilum, and on Pike formations. All I can find to date
is either inconclusive battles (Phyrric victories) for or against the romans,
or outflanking victories, or as at Magnesia the other troops routing carrying
away the phalanx.
As time progressed the Macedonian style armies lost a lot of the early
emphasis on the quality of the phalanx, and poorly disciplined pike, does not
fight well. The rules don't allow it but IrrD pike may well describe some
late armies.
I would love to see a 1:1 (ie head on pilum victory) with phalanx, however a
Roman general would not be too bright to try this IMHO.
All the best
